Sanjiv Chopra's book is a layman's inspiration to leadership. He shows that leadership is not rabble-rousing.

Sanjiv Chopra's book is a layman's inspiration to leadership. It is not just Mark Antony holding forth with the dead body of Caesar by his side. Sanjiv Chopra's book is at once both incredibly engaging and inspiring! I was wonderfully moved by the magical mosaic he weaves using real-life stories of leadership to convey the powerful idea that everyone can be an effective leader. Leadership by Example portrays a nice taxonomical structure to the tapestry that enhances our understanding of the fundamental attributes of leadership.

Once, while travelling in the bus provided by the organization I am working in, I witnessed an incidence which helped me understand the significance of taking initiative in meeting challenges head-on. A young man, probably in his early thirties, was driving his motorcycle in a rather haphazard and reckless manner. Sitting on the window seat, I saw that he overtook our bus and came right in front of it. Thankfully, our bus driver applied the brakes just in time, and a probable casualty was averted.

This is just an entertaining collection of quotes and brief stories of great people in history under headings such as "integrity", "humility". Motivational, but not educational. I'd like to return it.

Leadership is something we think a few people do. There are leaders in the country, leaders in business, leaders in church, you name the place and there are leaders there. And we look to these people to show us the way to do things. Sometimes these people are leaders in only one aspect of their lives, and followers else where. That is the point Dr. Chopra makes clear, we all have the potential to be leaders. We may not be leaders in every aspect of our lives, but we all have the potential and the moments to be leaders.

This book is written from a series of talks Dr. Chopra gave on the topic of leadership. He uses the "LEADERSHIP" mnemonic to explain his view on leadership is as follows: L - listen well. E - empathy. A - attitude. D - dreams and decisiveness. E - effectiveness. R - resilience. S - a sense of purpose. H - humility and humor. I - integrity and imagination. P - principles, and willingness to pack other people's parachutes.

In this book Dr. Chopra explains how we have to move people and understand where they are at in order to lead them to places and to do things. He gives warm moving examples of leadership from normal everyday people who did not see themselves as leaders, but led many people and did wonderful things for society.

I highly recommend this book for everyone to read to unlock the leadership potential in all of us. This book will move you with examples that will not surprise you, but with examples that will show you, you can lead by example!

"He who follows righteousness and mercy
Finds life, righteousness, and honor." -- Proverbs 21:21 (NKJV)

Let me make it clear that I'm reviewing the audio CD version of the book, as read by Alan Sklar.

I always enjoy listening to books about leadership. Through hearing such books read, I gain a deeper resonance with the lessons. That was truer with this reading than I usually experience.

For the first time in many years, I was reminded of times when I've been moved by moral leadership to take helpful actions that made a difference. It was a refreshing and empowering feeling. I highly recommend the experience to you.

I suspect that reading the book won't affect you nearly as much as listening. Stick with the audio CD.

The lessons themselves won't surprise you, but the cumulative effect of the examples will move you.

Lead by example!
Sanjiv Chopra's language throughtout his book is both straightforward and insightful. The many examples cited in the book highlights that simplicity and humility are among Chopra's personality trace. In this connection, chapter eight is a good example that Chopra values humility the most. LEADERSHIP served as an acronym to present his thoughts.
