Investment advice has some classic tomes and always trying to do the newest wrinkle is probably the worst advice you can get. The Loser's Game gives you an overall perspective that is extremely effective. The fantasy that you or your investment adviser can consistently beat the market is the equivalent to "investment porn".
Knowing your goals and having a realistic assessment of your or your adviser's skills is the fundamental place to start. Fantasy is not an advantageous quality when it comes to finance.

Great stuff.

Very accessible, and clearly gives an outlook on how to see your role as an investor, and what to expect from an investement advisor.

The book talks about Investment Policy but provides no examples of such. There is mention of stocks vs bonds vs money market, but only a mention. I agree with all the investment caveats that are mentioned and they are instructive. But there is little to guide me in creating and managing my portfolio. The other authors: Jan R. Squires and John L. Maginn are nowhere to be found. Did I purchase the correct book?

There is some confusion relating to this listing. The publication shown at the top is from the proceedings of a seminar in 1994. Ellis is a co-author. Ellis also published a book titled "Investment Policy: How to Win the Loser's Game". I have the second edition, published in 1993. To further complicate things, Ellis also has a book titled "Winning the Loser's Game, 6th edition: Timeless Strategies for Successful Investing Hardcover", published in 2013. I suspect this book is a revision and expansion (289 pages vs. 88 pages) of the book I have. Captain Classical's picture is of the book.

This short book from investing guru Charles Ellis is a gem. For readers who like clearly explained investment advice, this book will win you over. He writes in simple, easy to understand language for those new to investing as well as seasoned investors. Have you ever tried to beat the market? Ellis will educate you! As you read the book you'll ask yourself how you ever got along without Charles Ellis's sage investment wisdom. It's so simple, yet incredibly powerful.

I have used Ellis' recommendations as well as Jack Bogle's and have only applause for their ideas. As long as one is consistent and stays with their recommendations it's really hard to go wrong.
