The little man, in return, twisted the fingers of his hands anxiously. He had never been near such great men before. He was only an aging low-grade Technician who had long ago failed all tests designed to smoke out the gifted ones among mankind and had settled into the rut of unskilled labor. There was just this hobby of his that the great Programmer had found out about and was now making such a frightening fuss over. General Weider said, I find this atmosphere of mystery childish. You won’t in a moment, said Shuman.

San Diego Then & Now is the premiere photographic and narrative book to the visual growth of this picturesque Southern California city.

San Diego, America's sixth largest city, was a strictly small-town place a century ago. Farming was fundamental to the country's economy and the environment had barely felt man's imprint. To appreciate the vast changes that have occurred over time is the purpose of this book.

The seventy pairs of color and black and white photographs-historic and contemporary-show what once was and is now. From downtown's grimy waterfront to rural quaint villages to suburban population centers. San Diego has seen all this and more. And yet, some things, like the coastline, forests and sunny clime have hardly changes at all. Enticing text describes each picture then and now with the names of each place, the date it was taken, and where it is located.

George R. Jezek, is a native San Diegan and a professional photographer with a B.A. from the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara. He developed the idea for San Diego Then & Now after attending a lecture on western ghost towns and began researching and identifying interesting historical photos from the San Diego Historical Society archives. He then sought out the locations where the images were taken decades ago in order to capture in beautiful full color a record of the sites as they are today.

Roger M. Showley, fellow native San Diegan and staff writer for the San Diego Union-Tribune and author of two histories of San Diego, collaborated on the project, providing introductory text and picture captions.

I tend to buy the books "past and present" because I am a model builder and these books often give me good ideas about many of the cities I am interested in both for historical and geographical purposes.

I ordered the book on San Diego because I had a very old book about the city that was badly outdated and I was curious to see how the city had changed from "then". I have never been to San Diego so my knowledge of it was minimal.

This book is an excellent book about the city. It is beautifully illustrated and the contrasts between then and now stunning. The photographer did an excellent job of matching up the areas of the photos. If you are interested in getting an excellent book about San Diego I believe you will be pleased with this book.

My only complaint, and it is a minor one, is that the book is written by the perspective of an "insider" and they talk about places like everybody knows the area they are talking about. To an outsider like myself you are left a bit mystified because you don't really get an idea where some of the places are. "IF" the book had a map showing numbers where each photo was taken that would give you a great idea of the areas but sadly that is not the case. In spite of this, if you are looking for an excellent photo book of San Diego you will not be disappointed with this book.

I got this primarily as a picture book - I lived several places over the years in San Diego county. I saw the book at a boutique during a visit and put it on my wife's gift list. Very happy I decided to purchase. The pictures tell a very interesting story, but the descriptions and historical vignettes are well-researched and are the gem in this book. If you like this region's history - or just like seeing before and now picture comparisons, this is an excellent source. Highly recommended.

Great pictures and a great idea to show past and present locations. This idea has been copied and used by others.
Think he could do an update to this book.

The book arrived well packaged and in good time. The book was even signed by the photographer. It was like getting a bonus. The book is in coffee table condition and such a surprise for a 'used' item.

I think that a very good way to get a sense of where we are in the continuum of time is to examine photographs of familiar places as they were in the distant or even not-too-distant past.
