Useful, step-by-step guide to getting the most out of your cruise expierience. Not about cruise lines or itineraries, more of a FAQ describing what to bring, how to pack, what to expect, unusual situations, etc.
Not a lot of material but what there is, is "cherce".

Don't cruise without reading this book before you go!!! A steal at any price.
Thetalune
Only cruise book you'll ever need.
Captain America
This is an indispensable book for anyone--and I do mean anyone--who is going on a cruise. First timers to frequent cruisers will enjoy this book, and learn something valuable from it that they can apply to their next voyage.
Kane's chapters cover everything from buying clothes to packing them properly, what you should do during your first few hours on board, how to respond to invitations to dine with the captain, food on board, and proper treatment of the ship's staff.
I learned the most from the packing section--always my week point--which sets out in marvelous (and humorous!) detail when you should start packing (2 days before), why you need a bunch of electric cable controllers (better security than padlocks on your luggage), the "secrets of the great tote" (how to include everything in your carry on that you will want in the first few hours), and much, much more.
Her tips for the first few hours on board are also EXACTLY right based on my experience.
This is a smallish book that you would want to buy for yourself or someone else at least a few weeks before you leave so that you have time to read it, digest it, pack your stuff, and have a wonderful time! Then, you won't have to take it with you (leaving more room in your suitcases...)

Pam Kane has been a long-time favorite author of computer professionals, especially those of us who work in the area of online communications and security.
A highly respect colleague and author, Charlie Bowen, called her "The best storyteller in cyberspace." Her books were always incisive, error-free, top-notch professional and, as a bonus, her trademark sense of humor shone through even the driest subject.
Now we know. She's been cruising. Wondering where she had gone, I checked in with amazon.com to see if she had written anything new in the computer world and found CRUISE CONTROL. Could it be the same Pam Kane. The one who played with yo-yos with Cliff Stoll, who wrote "Cuckoo's Egg".
The first words in the book proved that it was Pam, certainly. It is impossible to miss her totaly unique style.
Most computer wonks do not cruise. I do. I will probably cruise more now that Internet hookups are becoming available and am looking forward to Norwegian SKy. I will never wear a tuxedo (it would not match my sneakers) and I am glad Pam told me I will never have to.
She has NOT lost her touch. Who else could dumb down ships' terminology to "pointy end" (bow) and "round end" (stern) without offending somebody who already knew it?
If a computer geek's recommendation is worth anything, take my word for it. This is a book worth reading even if the closest you ever got to a cruise is typing [...] ... and cruising the Web. You will be on a cruise ship, carrying your laptop, before you know it.

For the first-time cruiser, this book could be considered a necessity. But I'm betting that even experienced cruisers would find some useful information here.
One vital concern when booking a first cruise is "What kind of clothes will I need, and how can I pack it all in the allowable luggage?" With my own first cruise, Pam did her best to teach me these things via email. Once we were in our cabin, though, I had plowed through only about 2/3 of my belongings when I realized that Pam had not only unpacked and stowed all her gear, but had also freshened up a bit and was sitting on the balcony with her feet up enjoying a gin-and-tonic.
Pam Kane's Cruise Control is *such* a neat book -- you can not only get one for yourself, but its price is just right for picking up as a gift for that special friend who is planning a special first cruise. She presents her "what to know before you go" information in a manner reminiscent of those famous household hints books written by Heloise. Pam answers questions you might never have thought to ask, and she does so succinctly and with delicious humor.
I highly recommend Cruise Control - It's a perfect price, too, to buy one for you and one for that special friend who is planning a first-time cruise.

Pamela Kane has produced a "keeper" with her knowledgeable and refreshingly-humorous how-to book, "Cruise Control." This book is not about how to select the perfect ship, but how to survive "pre-cruise panic" and ensure that your cruising experience will be an enjoyable one - starting at home, and continuing once you're aboard. Her clever writing style adds some spice to the usually-bland library of books about cruise ships and cruising. For example, I laughed so hard I almost fell out of my chair while reading one of her innovative suggestions for ensuring that your window on the promenade deck is not made from two-way glass. My wife and I have been on 11 cruises, and most of Ms. Kane's suggestions read like they came from our own mouths. She's "right on!" This book should be mandatory reading (and studying) for first-time cruisers, and even those with many sailings behind them can find some new information and glean some helpful tidbits from this witty paperback. It belongs in every cruiser's library!
Those of you who have been fortunate enough to be frequent readers of Prodigy's Travel Bulletin Boards have seen many postings by the author of this book. Pamela is known for her witty outlook on the vagaries of travel, especially on cruise ships. She has brought her many years of experience into print for all of us.
If you're new to cruising this book will tell you just about everything you need to know about the subject. If you're an old hand you'll chuckle and nod as Pamela covers situations which we've all encountered.
Where was this book when we needed it?
