I studied art history in college but upon arriving in Italy, I realized I'd forgotten almost everything. Luckily, we can rely on Rick for a quick refresher course. The book has a croniligical guide of art and history plus reference pages for specific styles, art techniques and art symbolism. Pick it up before boarding the plane and you'll be ready for exploring when you land!

History books in general can be a bit dry and boring, but this was a great read! I've been a fan of Rick Steves travel books and his television program for quite a while and his personality definitely comes through in this book. It does a great job of covering a wide range of European history at a high level. If you're looking for intense detail about Alexander the Great, for instance, this probably wont be what your looking for. This book is best used as a helpful historical guide for people who love to travel. Various site's, buildings, art pieces, etc. are given extra meaning and historical significance in this travel/historical guide. Overall, this is great read to gain basic historical knowledge for those of us that love to travel and learn about the places we visit.

Love it. I agree w/ Rick--rip out parts you need on a trip because the book is very heavy for a suitcase. Very interesting reading for basic art history--good for someone who doesn't generally care much about art. I minored in art history but I still thought it was interesting.

This book has been around since Jesus was a teenager and it is still the best of its type if you are a european newbie. you will always be in the know, when it comes to just what the heck you are looking at, in terms of art and history.

Love Rick's humor throughout this book. Makes history a little more palatable. Not a book for a history buff. Great for the traveler to get some background on European history to fully appreciate your trip. Enjoy!

Excellent and humorous........well written and informative. I'm not an art lover and I know nothing about it, but after reading this , I'm ready to head to Europe to get a first look at some of the pieces I've read about.....
HILARIOUS! This is such a wonderful book. It gives you history, illustrated photos, and laughs as you prepare for going to some of Europe's greatest galleries and art museums. Another book definitely worth the purchase price! Enjoyable and printed on high quality paper to boot!.
