Ho hum--another Captain Cook book, I thought at first and it was puzzling as to quite why an anthropologist as competent as Anne Salmond would, besides as a "money spinner", bother to write yet ANOTHER book on a topic of which there seemed little else to sa.a topic which had been so completely "done".

Report an error in the book. The Pacific voyages of James Cook sailed across perilous tropical seas, survived hurricanes and volcanic eruptions, discovered unknown lands and peoples and made their Captain an icon of imperial history. Yet, as Anne Salmond shows, the story of these epic South Sea journeys is far more than one of conquest and control. She has devoted a lifetime to the study of relations between Europeans and Polynesians, and this book is the result.

If you are a fan of adventure on the high seas from the 1600s to the 1900s like I am, this is the book for you. There are layers upon layers of human interaction and culture clash within the same civilization not to mention the clash of nearly stone age peoples with what was then modern western civilization. It's hard to say who was truly the most barbarous. Lots of good insight into Captain Cook and his crews, not to mention the "good" captain's dealings with the chiefs and peoples he discovers. I highly recommend it.
