Gerald Malcolm Durrell, OBE (7 January 1925 – 30 January 1995) was a British naturalist, zookeeper, conservationist, author, and television presenter. He founded the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust and the Jersey Zoo on the Channel Island of Jersey in 1959. His memoirs of his family's years living in Greece were adapted into two television series (My Family and Other Animals, 1987, and The Durrells, 2016–2019) and one television film (My Family and Other Animals, 2005).

1925 - Gerald Durrell was born in India. There were numerous rare monkeys and other mammals, as well as birds and reptiles. Two years later, on May 24th, Gerald and Lee were married in Memphis in her parents’ back garden. At the age of three he moved to England and later spent four idyllic years growing up in Corfu with his mother, sister and brothers. Even before the zoo opened to the public, a number of animals had bred. Over the next decade they travelled the world making television documentaries and writing books about animals and conservation.

Gerald Durrell was one of Britain’s best-loved naturalists, whose books, including My Family and Other Animals, continue to entertain and amuse generations of children and adults alike. Fifteen of his classic titles have now been republished by Bello. Delightfully readable and often very funny.

This book is a funny and strongly compelling collection of stories written by Gerald Durrell - conservationist, author, audacious story-teller, hero. His wife, Lee Durrell, has truly stepped up to the plate and put together a marvelous representation of Durrell's work, taking up the cause of conservation as ably as her husband could have wished. This timely book is a must-read for anyone who lives on our fragile planet.

Gerald Durrell is the best. His books are so well done and enjoyable. The work he did all his life at the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust lives on and is a great legacy. Met him when I was in Madagascar at the same time. Definitely a thrill. He will always be one of my heroes.
