Lawrence George Durrell (/ˈdʊərəl, ˈdʌr-/; 27 February 1912 – 7 November 1990) was an expatriate British novelist, poet, dramatist, and travel writer. He was the oldest brother of naturalist and writer Gerald Durrell. Born in India to British colonial parents, he was sent to England at the age of eleven for his education

Durrell's first important work, The Black Book (1938), was greeted by . Eliot as "the first piece of work by a new English writer to give me any hope for the future of prose fiction. In it, Durrell has said, "I first heard the sound of my own voice. This is an experience no artist ever forgets. Durrell's other writings include three verse plays with ancient settings, a dozen books of poetry, including his Collected Poems (1956), five island books (the best of which, Bitter Lemons, 1959, won the Duff Cooper Prize), and several collections of "Sketches from Diplomatic Life.

For years his friend Martine begged him to visit her on this sun-kissed paradise, and though he always intended to, life inevitably interfered. It took Martine’s sudden death to finally bring him to the island’s shores

Lawrence Durrell's 1977 recreation of a bus tour of Sicily with a dozen or so quirky international travelers is a delicious mini-vacation. His outdoor evenings with the sea as a backdrop and enveloped by the flower-filled air are worth the trip. He muses on the ancient Greeks and on an old friend who had invited him to visit many times. She died before he made the trip and her letters punctuate many of the tour stops. The book is funny and observant of place and changing relationships in the cage of a travel group. Great summer reading!

As preparation for our visit to Sicily I read this fascinating adventure and found several of the observations to still be true today. Durrell has a special way with words and with uniquely capturing his fellow travelers. We enjoyed our visits to several of the sites he mentions in his memoire, and enjoyed them all the more because of the set ups he provided in his book.

A look back at the island from a somewhat archaic view. A very interesting slice of tourist life around Sicily.

The only shortcoming of this book is that it did not include the illustrations that were present in an earlier edition, otherwise it was fine.

This is a talkative travelogue. I rather enjoy Durrell's writing style. I am going to Sicily and will most likely do a similar rpute

I have not finished it yet but, as I have been to Sicily and have enjoyed other books by Lawrence Durrell I am giving it 5 stars. Just to annoy him, I give some of Gerald's books 5 stars too!
