I bought this book among several other paperbacks from my childhood at a secondhand bookshop last year. I remembered the opening chapters being read to us by my primary school teacher but for some reason we didn't finish the book and I never found out how it ended. The only thing I've ever read by Philippa Pearce is Tom's Midnight Garden, so I was somewhat surprised to find this one is neither fantasy nor really historical (especially since the jacket description did it's best to conceal that fact). This is a nice book, but not one I like or will re-read as much as Tom's Midnight Garden.

This is a book about a young girl. It is written for other young girls. And it's excellent for them. But you don't have to be a girl, or even young, to love this book. I did. And I'm a sixty-year-old man. It is a beautiful read.
