Gray, Eva. So much for my hypervigilance. hing him? I hurry to the door of the convenience store, but it’s locked. So he’s not in there, unless he figured out how to lock the door behind him really quickly. I peer in through the glass, but there’s no movement in the dark aisles. I hiss, whirling around. Drew! Where are you?. The gas pumps are like tall, silent robots, watching me blankly

This is the second book (of a projected four) that comprise the Tomorrow Girls -- a series about four girls who are attending Country Manor School in a bleak near-future which finds the US in perpetual war and children shipped off for their own "safety", prepared for a life of privation and service. (These books should be read in order, so my comments will give away information from book one.) In the first book, these protagonists (Louisa, her pretend twin Maddie, conspiracy-theorist Evelyn and athlete Rosie) enter the school as proscribed and find that there are deadly secrets -- the school's faculty are secretly working for the enemy and plan to take their students hostage; at the end of the book the girls have escaped into the forest surrounding the school -- far away from home and unsure what to do. As this second book picks up immediately after the first, we're with the girls as they plan and execute their escape with the help of a few guys from the nearby boys' school. What I really love about this series is the interesting twist of having each of the books narrated by a different girl. The first story was told by Louisa, a girl who found herself at the school and was shocked to find out what was really going on. This time around it's athlete Latina Rosie who tells the story as the group tries to make their way back to their families in Chicago.

I think the characters, dialogue and situations are well told and authentic. I've been reading these to boys, who don't always like a book with girls in the lead, but the thriller vibe and action overcame their hesitation, and this series is eagerly enjoyed now. Can't wait to read the other two books in the series.

Excellent thriller for middle grades and possibly high school readers.

This book was about Rosie the girl in the first book that is bossy and in a way mean. I don't give spoilers so you can read this without feeling like you read small version of the book. In the middle of the book it give you small hints of Rosie`s sister Wren but by the end you know who she is. I don't think you should read the 2nd book before the 1st because they are books that leave you hanging and there are things in the 1st book you have to know in order to understand the 2nd book and they don't remind you of those small things you need to know but if you read them in order it would make sense. I would recommend this book to 9-12 year old's.There are
