Edgar Allan Poe, Scott McKowen (Illustrator). Arthur Pober (Afterword). Overall, Edgar Allen Poe is a brutal writer and wasn't afraid to dabble with sorcery and create stories that should've stayed in the depths of Hell. Unfortunately, I wasn't super crazy about this collection. They were dark and often had me question my own morals and fleeting mortality. Alas, it was darkness I didn't want to be led out of.

If you've only ever read Poe as you find it in text books, the breadth of stories and subject matter may surprise you. Very good edition. Good foot notes. Looks sharp in your library.

Do you want to take a walk with me?

I live near an old cemetery...The Alterfriedhof... a walled place pockmarked with headstones of Victorian prominence...much like the cover of this book. A large iron gate has stood since 1833 and still opens. Headstones stand ornate with epitaphs that tell of past greatness. Often these graves have been restored, painted and documented as historically significant. There are others as well...

In the forgotten corners of the Friedhof are smaller stones on fainter trails... moss covered, with stories hard to read. One is just a fragment, like a small tooth, jutting from the ground...does a baby lie sleeping below? Each has a story.

The brief life of a Fay dissipates in the dark shadows of twilight after a bright moment on a forgotten lake.

A mummy rivals Jay Leno in a late night talk to his incredulous guests.

A tour of Libya's wastes tells us nothing about Hillary Clinton or our unfortunate embassy.

A dreary room becomes a loudspeaker for the familiar dead...no late night radio present.

A canoe trip leads to inexplicable paradise.

No in flight movies on this balloon trip across the Atlantic.

An obsession with teeth leads to an unwanted collection and a second chance at life.

Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder but so is civilization.

An oval portrait of a girl too quiet and pale gives new meaning to "still life" painting.

A box must be carried on board a ship and then to eternity.

Well known Poe tales such as The Pit and The Pendulum dominate this graveyard of stories but there are others resting here. The faint trail past the famous leads to the obscure graves that must be cleaned off and maybe exumed to be understood. Its dusk now and the Alterfriedhof is dark. Be sure to close the old gate behind you.
