Catherine the Great might be causally known as a cruel dictator with lots of lovers, but author Vincent shows how the Empress of Russia actually took on her position (well, after she had her husband murdered) with some good intentions. Smart, unafraid, and well read, Catherine wanted to use the ideas of the Enlightenment to uplift Russia and its citizens. While able to make some improvements, palace intrigue as well as Catherine’s own personality brought out her iron will. Young readers will find the manipulation of Catherine’s early days particularly interesting.

Biography of Catherine the Great of Russia. Wicked History (Paperback). Zu Vincent's book examines both sides of Catherine's life, allowing the reader to draw his own conclusions

Biography of Catherine the Great of Russia. Zu Vincent's book examines both sides of Catherine's life, allowing the reader to draw his own conclusions. Skillful use of maps, period quotations, illustrations, and explanatory text box insets, Catherine the Great: Empress of Russia is a brief, attention-grabbing biography. A "Wicked Web" replaces the usual "family tree," and a "Timeline of Terror" replaces the more benign and generic timeline.

Catherine the Great schemed her way from being a minor princess to empress of Russia. She had lots of ideas, some that she never was able to carry out, and could be pretty ruthless when it came to dealing with enemies. This Catherine the Great Wicked History book tells her story and asks if she really was wicked or just did what she had to do to achieve her goals. I highly recommend this book to kids learning about Imperial Russia.

This book along with Cixi: Empress of China is also geared towards teenagers or middle school children. It is informative and well done.
Large print and simple sentences make this seem like a book for younger readers. It is not - it emphasizes her affairs and possibly illegitimate children to the exclusion of the rest of the history. Not recommended.
