Through the book, the authors develop a sample application that has similar issues as the ones the exam deals with. The book is a good read and the authors have a good style. Since the Sun Certification process (scjp, scjd) is self taught, I find books like this valuable because they act as your instructor to help teach the best practices in different scenarios. Not something I'd take a star away from because I think they already do a good job. -Pat.

I recommend this book because I found it to be valuable in helping me to pass the Sun Certified Java Developer .

Alain Trottier's "Java 2 Developer Exam Cram 2," is a distant second. Books that attempt to cover both the Sun Certified Java Programmer (SCJP) and SCJD exams generally seem to do a good job of covering the programmer's exam, but are significantly less comprehensive.

It is interesting that a few readers have given the book one or two stars rating while more than a few readers (including myself) are giving it 5 stars outright.
I have to say this about Mehran Habibi: he is one of the best!
The book is quite deceptive! If you just buy it to browse through it and hope to learn something while browing, then you will be disappointed since it has been written in a very utalitarian style. If you are trying to figure out how to do the SCJD assignment and are feeling worried/confused/bewildered and experiencing a whole lot of other uncomfortable emotions, then buy this book and use it. This will grow on you and you will begin to love it.
Thanks Max (Mehran), see you around the ranch.

Bought this years ago. Hey, Jeremy - can you do one of these for Java 7???? I want to get certified for Java 7 and you could help me!

Where is the Zero star option when you need it?!? I bought this book because I read reviews and some recommendations from people here. I think that it's a terrible book. Let me explain: the examples given and metaphors are just plain horrible, and it gets more confusing trying to follow what the author had in mind than learning from Sun online docs. It's full of typos and mistakes. Spelling checker anyone? The explainations of NIO are not requested by the exam so another useless topic in the book that I suspect was added to populate the volume and justify a higher price. The topic on lock on records which is very important and appears in every exam given by Sun is not described in much details neither. The index at the end is just useless (so many words are missing.) Most chapters are not related to the exam (why is there a thread chapter in there since you are supposed to have learned that from the K&B book for the Prog exam already?) I found so much more info in the archives of the JavaRanch forum and for free, that I would advice everyone to do the same and browse this wonderful Web site instead of wasting trees and your money on that book as I unfortunatly did.

I recommend this book because I found it to be valuable in helping me to pass the Sun Certified Java Developer (SCJD) Exam with a perfect score (400/400).
This is simply the best book available for those working on the SCJD Exam. Alain Trottier's "Java 2 Developer Exam Cram 2," is a distant second. Those are the only two books available that cover this exam in an in-depth manner. Books that attempt to cover both the Sun Certified Java Programmer (SCJP) and SCJD exams generally seem to do a good job of covering the programmer's exam, but are significantly less comprehensive when it comes to the developer's exam.
This book develops a sample project that is analogous to the project required for the SCJD examination. The complete source code is available for downloading from the publisher. The design and implementation issues explored in the sample project are similar to those required in order to successfully complete the exam. Those expecting to download the sample project, make a few cosmetic alterations, and upload the result as their exam submission will be disappointed. On the other hand, those who feel they would benefit from seeing what a complete solution to a similar problem looks like, and who would like some specific guidance about how to approach the various issues surrounding the project will be happy to have this book.
Another nice feature of this book is that it provides links to some other very helpful resources. The most useful of these is [...] an excellent Java site that provides an indispensable developer certification discussion forum for those working on the SCJD. It's the best place to go with your SCJD questions. Mehran (Max) Habibi, one of the authors of this book, is a contributor to that discussion forum.

I was fooled by the previous great reviews! In studying for the developer cert I found this book to be lacking in many ways. First off I've found it impossible to do well on the exam without structuring the learning of new material with actual coding experience. This book does not facilitate this learning process it instead very briefly states an exam objective followed by an unexplained code snippet and then moves on.
I cannot believe anyone would find this book useful because it does an equally poor job teaching to those inclined to learn through doing, seeing, or even memorization. In my opinion the way I studied for the dev. cert while taking a bit longer will prove much more fruitful. I picked up the Deitel Java How to Program book and read and worked through the examples from the chapter 12 -25. "The previous chapters cover the programmer cert." While this book is not targeted in its title as being for the cert's it will actually teach you how to program Java and isn't that what we want?
