jQuery UI Themes: Beginner's Guide is for web developers who want to design professional-looking applications that are resilient to change. As a busy programmer, who is more into coding than beautification, I was happy to turn over the lion's share of CSS work to jQuery UI, but dealing with some of its features seemed a bit murky until I got this book. I didn't want to have to spend time reading a whole book, but I was able to use this as a quick-reference to get the job done.

Each topic seems a repeat of the previous. There apparently isn't all that much to know about styling and theming the jquery ui. Personally I found the pop quizzes at the end of each chapter annoying. The last two chapters were more generally useful.

This might be a good introduction for student, to give them an interest/introduction to the subject.

Most of what this book covers can be found online for free. If you like working with a physical book, or if you don't want to search on the net to find themes related information, this book could be useful to you.

This book is missing the big picture. It dives right into details that are meaningless until you understand JQuery UI. Of course, you wouldn't have bought a "Beginner's Guide" if you already understood the subject...

If you're wondering, "How do I set a specific border style for a ui-widget-content item?" then this is book you need to buy!

If you're wondering, "What is the best way to use the JQuery UI toolbox to theme and design my site? What is the general workflow? Which tools are best for which tasks?" then this is *not* the book you're looking for.

This book is a useful tutorial on directly modifying jQuery UI themes: the author understands the subject well and explains it clearly.

There are two problems. First, he has difficulty writing decent English. There is a spelling or grammatical mistake on virtually every page (e.g., "it's" confused with "its", "with" confused with "will", and so on). In addition, the author seems unable to write long sentences using subordinate clauses, so the text has a grade-school quality to it.

The second problem is that the book is far too long - and too expensive - for the ideas which are being conveyed. The same examples are repeated multiple times with minor variations and the same code is explained again and again.

Overall, this book is worth buying and worth reading, despite these problems. There is material which it would be hard to find elsewhere, and the examples are sensible and easy to follow. But Packt Publishing needs to invest more money in proof-readers and editors if it wants to join the ranks of professional publishers.
