Series: Structural Analysis in the Social Sciences (Book 27). Publisher: Cambridge University Press (January 10, 2005). Pajek is also a software program for the analysis and visualisation of very large networks; networks with thousands if not millions of vertices. It is a program I use occasionally, however I prefer UCINET and NetMiner 3, because I find these programs to be easier to use. It is precisely for this reason I bought and read "Exploratory Social Network Analysis with Pajek" by Wouter de Nooy, Andrej Mrvar, and Vladimir Batagelj.

De Nooy . Mrvar . and Batagelj V. Exploratory Social Network Analysis with Pajek. The next 3 parts with chapters 3–11 focus on the major applications of social network analysis in the Social Sciences using Pajek. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press; 2018. The final part with chapters 12–13 focuses on dense and small networks. Next, we focus on the book chapters on a one by one basis. The book commences with the first chapter explaining the basics of social network analysis (SNA) besides introducing the Pajek menu structure along with some useful network visualization commands.

This is an extensively revised and expanded second edition of the successful textbook on social network analysis integrating theory, applications, and network analysis using Pajek. The main structural concepts and their applications in social research are introduced with exercises. Pajek software and data sets are available so readers can learn network analysis through application and case studies. Readers will have the knowledge, skill, and tools to apply social network analysis across the social sciences, from anthropology and sociology to business administration and history. This second edition has a new chapter on random network models, for example, scale-free and small-world networks and Monte Carlo simulation; discussion of multiple relations, islands, and matrix multiplication; new structural indices such as eigenvector centrality, degree distribution, and clustering coefficients; new visualization options that include circular layout for partitions and drawing a network geographically as a 3D surface; and using Unicode labels. This new edition also includes instructions on exporting data from Pajek to R software. It offers updated descriptions and screen shots for working with Pajek (version 2.03).

As a new comer of SNA, the book is great. I would rate it 4.5.

Dong SNA means using SNA software. You cannot learn swimming just by reading book. "Exploratory Social Network Analysis with Pajek" not only provides theory of SNA but also step by step guidelines on how to use Pajek to do acutal analysis. Pajek provides data set used in EACH chapters from their website for reader to download and try. That helps me understand SNA concepts a lot. Recommend reader downloading their data set to try, not JUST read the book.

I rate it only 4.5 but not 5. The book is great on "guiding" reader how to do SNA. However, if I have somethings want to do for analysis, it is not easy to search relevant topics. But I understand, it is a book on using Pajek, not handbook of SNA.

There have been quite a few texts on SNA out in the last few years. For those of us who are not mathematicians, but who are ready to start digging into the nitty gritty of running analyses, this is a wonderful resource. I honestly had no idea so much could be done with Pajek.

It also provides some interesting examples for visualizing two-mode networks that I am pretty excited to play around with.

Although this book doesn't cover all that you need to know on network analysis is a very good place to start. The book combines a summary presentation of concepts followed by applications in the shape of examples using the software Pajek (spider in Slovenian). Although you will need other books to deepen and/or widen your knowledge you will have a headstart.

This is the best book available on network analysis, and especially on Pajek software use. Excellent book that can be used by the analyst or the student.

Never had a textbook that taught the software. I like it alot.
