I've had a lot of luck with the for dummies series in the past. It's usually a good way to bootstrap yourself into a technology if you have little experience with the technology. Granted the subject matter in this case is tough. There's a lot to teach. Unfortunately, at least one of these writers is not a very good teacher.

There's a lot of step by step instructions; but, a lot of the meanings of those steps are glossed over. It seems like the author(s) spends time on unimportant details and fails to expound on important details. The author(s) also make some unfortunate assumptions about what you do and don't know already and that contributes to the unimportant vs. important info problem. Another failing that results from that is that they take time to explain how to do things the wrong way so that they can explain how to do it the right way. In one case, they took 2 pages to show you the wrong way before moving on to the right way. This is confusing and a waste of my time.

I found typographical errors in the sample code. I checked it against the code I downloaded from their site. This is very frustrating as readers don't have a complete grasp of the material and are not able to debug their bad code. I was never able to compile either of the code projects which impairs learning as well. I was able to compile the code from their site; but, not able to combine it with my code and get it to compile.

The book tries to teach too much. They should have concentrated more on the basics and explained things more clearly and fully.

By the time you finish this book you will have a grasp of many of the details about iPhone application development; but, you will not have a clear picture about how to actually create one from scratch.

I am absolutely not happy with this book. It contains too much useless information, the author wasted lots of paper and IMHO greenpeace should sue him! :) I could simply recycle 50% of the book without losing any valuable information.

I was aware of negative reviews written by others. I did not pay that much attention to them because I knew that software development requires knowledge in theory and it is not so easy for inexperienced person to become a software developer without passing appropriate course.

I am software developer for last 13 years, I needed a book to get general idea how iPhone apps are developed but this book is something completely useless for both: newbie and experienced developers.

This book teach you the basics of programming apps, very good for beginners like I was, learned a lot. Its not specific for one iOS with the same principles you can understand how to make an app no matter what iOS you are working on.

In this book it gets a little more involved than the other books. But again Neil Goldstein does a great job!
