It assumes that the user knows InDesign CS5 very well. This is essential; since it is impossible to understand many of the subtleties of the InDesign object model without an intimate knowledge of the elements of InDesign which these scripting objects represent. Each chapter contains tutorials headed Try it for yourself! The materials required to complete all of these tutorials is in the work files folder.

InDesign is now regarded as the industry standard in desktop publishing and is very widely used by publishing professionals and non-specialists alike. Many users have a pressing need for automation of their workflows but have been reluctant to get started because of the lack of a simple internal mechanism for recording steps, like Photoshop and Illustrator actions.Instead InDesign relies on scripting which, for many InDesign users, may seem a little too much like hard work. In fact, InDesign comes with all the tools necessary for creating scripts and scripting is not that difficult--it can even be fun! This book is aimed at the general user and provides an introduction to scripting InDesign, using JavaScript to create simple cross-platform solutions. It also gives a general introduction to XML, DTDs and XSLT, before showing how to automate the importing and exporting of XML data.Learn proactively through step-by-step tutorials on creating JavaScript solutions: the "Try it for yourself!" approach allows you to see for yourself how scripts are put together.Create scripts that manipulate text and images, build documents automatically and output them as interactive PDFs.Become familiar with the InDesign object model: as you work through the book, you will make repeated use of the essential syntax for manipulating InDesign objects such as document, pages, text frames, graphics and preferences.Create user interfaces to make your scripts more flexible and user-friendly. Rather than just creating scripts which always perform the same steps, you will learn to user ScriptUI to provide users with the ability to make choices that determine what the script will do.Learn how to automate XML import and export and provide an interface which allows the user to filter import by supplying parameter values.

I have InDesign CC 2018. I could not find a book dealing with Javascript for InDesign CC. The "newest" one I could find was this, for CS5. Thinking, "well, Javascript probably hasn't changed that much," I bought it (in desperation). On page 178 is exactly the routine I want. I typed it in with microscopic care. Success! The panel appeared. But when I activated it, nothing happened. A few moments later InDesign crashed. I have gone over the code with a fine-toothed come, and nothing is incorrect as far as the book is concerned. Every time I run it, it crashed InDesign. My conclusion: I made a $39 mistake. This does NOT work in Adobe InDesign CC. And there appear to be no new materials available. HELP!!

I'm well into chapter 6 and I give the book, for myself, 5 stars. But I spent a full career as a programmer.

The good, for a programmer learning a new language: the book provides a clearly laid out introduction to javascript for InDesign with many scripts which if you take the time to type them in and run them do an excellent job of teaching the language and give a reasonable, usable introduction to the object model.

The bad (1): the scripts include a goodly number of programming errors (and I can't find where to report them!). For two examples, (a) there is a missing "var" in the first use of "i" in a "for" statement, and (b) several scripts check whether you are on a Windows computer by testing if $.os.indexOf("Windows") > 0 (but the os string returned on a Windows 7 computer begins with "Windows" and therefore the test returns 0 on a Windows computer as well as a Mac. One solution? check for "indows".).

The bad (2): Many of the methods are introduced without the author providing the full syntax. OK, if you go to [...] you will find all the information you need, but the book doesn't point you to it.

I'm a programmer and I find it educational to correct the scripts and natural to search for a full object model reference, so 5 stars for the book if you are a programmer. But if you are not a programmer you'll find it frustrating to try to make the scripts work.

I haven't finished reading the book (because I have to learn JavaScript and XML); However, I would like to say that for a person who has little inclination for learning javascript or any other computer language, the author explains it easily. If you need to learn Javascript and InDesign and XML, I would recommend this book as it cares to explain it in a logical manner. Also, the tutorials look relevant and it makes me want to go through them and really learn them as I realize I need to use those tutorials in my workflow. I will write a follow-up after I am done.

There are not many books describing the Object model of Indesign. Although this one scratches the surface it is a good start to get you going. I bought both books but if you doubt buy this one with XML as an extra. I'm also looking for information on speeding up scripts by writing plugins in C# or C++ but there is no word on that topic in this book. I could also do with more information on text manipulation; getting positions back from were your cursor is on a certain character in a paragraph. Perhaps this book should be a course on Linda.com

Good book but buy InDesign CS5 Automation Using XML & JavaScript from the same author. A good starting point for javascriptinging indesign

The color is beautiful. The fabric is soft and nice. The length is excellent with leggings. I would recommend that one should order a size up from their usual size if they are not very slender.
I am always interested in anything from the past and this is a good book. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys past history.
