In the Information Technologies industry there are few domains less understood than Database Administration. People keep asking what the responsibilities of a Database Administrator are, what the specific tasks and processes Database Administrators rely on to fulfill those responsibilities, and by which rules Database Administrators abide to deal with whatever they do. Some people ask those questions out of simple curiosity, others because they are in or close to a DBA role, others because they have to deal with DBAs in a user, developer or management, etc. capacity, and want to have a better understanding of the DBA world. Everyone has its own reasons to ask questions about the database administration world; questions are always the same. This book intends to answer those questions. The final intention is to help you understand the world of Database Administration without resorting to technicalities and independently of the technology of choice and, without a single SQL command. Enjoy it.

A very misleading title since you will not understand anything about Database Administration when you’re done reading this. In my opinion this book was written for a grade school audience. If you have zero understanding of information technology and have never heard the term database before then maybe you will get something out of this book. If you are in the field of information technology in any capacity then this book is not for you.

I'm no computer genius but I'm A+, Network+ Security+ certified, have technical support experience and I have a small programming background. I would say maybe I wasn't the target audience for the book but he states "the target audience is not only Database Administrators but also other information technology and information systems professionals ranging from entry level to management level..."

I purchased this book based on the title and also on the three 5 star reviews which I now question the authenticity of. I finished the book in about an hour so I'm more concerned about the 15 dollars than about the total waste of time.

I was expecting some insight into basic database terminology and task that I could apply to both job interviews and civil service test question. I was also expecting to translate some of the knowledge to my test installations of Mysql and Microsoft Sql sever express.

I'm going to stick to the tutorials from newboston.org, a pretty good book that I got on Amazon called "Databases DeMYSTiFieD" and Relational Databases Ebook (2.99 Kindle).

Finally a book that says "WHY" you should do something and a can be read in a few hours on a weekend. It's not indepth but does cover many political topics, contract topics, and has suggestions for those. It helps to explain how to deal with people outside of the IT dept. Of course it covers the basics of planning, projects, and TO-DO list type stuff.

Buy this book, read it once a month for the first 6 months of your DBA career and then shelve it. Hand it down to "the new guy" in the department. Nobody pointed me to this book, I found it on my own and plan to hand this book down to the guy who takes my job. Write some notes in it, personalize it, and your own ideas.

This book should remain on site for any IT group with a DBA. It's for rookies and advanced users with less corporate experience as they will also benefit from this greatly.

Amateur printing and shallow content. Go pick up DBA Survivor by Larock - it's the book you're looking for. This one is a total sham.

Easy to read, easy to understand, very well organized. A rare window to the database administrator's world shedding light on how they think and work.

After describing database administration objectives and best practices the book goes beyond showing how and where DBA's are inserted in the socio-technical system - full of valuable information including rules and tips.

DBAs and everybody dealing with DBAs will benefit from this book.

A great book. A Very easy read with a wealth of information without being pretentious. Very quickly gives you a good insight into the DBA world and also exposes some best practices which are applicable to almost any field in IT.

I highly recommend it for entry level IT people and people who are new to interacting with IT.
