I received a pre-release copy of this book (probably the last draft) before it was published when I took 1. 4 (the MIT Department of Chemical Engineering numerical methods class) in Fall 2006. The main problem I had with the book (in that form) is that the discussion of linear algebra in the text is wrong (unless you specifically restrict it to the positive definite case; both of my advisers taught the class over my time in graduate school, and one of them pointed out the errors in the text - repeatedly).

The authors begin by introducing the solution of nonlinear equations using several standard approaches, including methods of successive substitution and linear interpolation; the Wegstein method, the Newton-Raphson method; the Eigenvalue method; and synthetic division algorithms. With these fundamentals in hand, they move on to simultaneous linear algebraic equations, covering matrix and vector operations; Cramer's rule; Gauss methods; the Jacobi method; and the characteristic-value problem.
