There is not much else out there for the 642-637 SECURE exam. The CCNA-Security book, of course, covers similar material, but not to the same degree as in this book. So that's the problem: if you want to prepare for the exam, you have to get through this book.

The table of contents is the first sign something is amiss. "Part III Cisco IOS Threat Detection and Control" somehow maps to chapters dealing exclusively with VPNs. VPNs have nothing to do with threat detection. That would seem to be more the domain, say, of an IPS device. VPNs even manage to make an appearance in "Part II Cisco IOS Foundation Security Solutions." One would think all of them would properly belong in, say, "Part IV Managing and Implementing Cisco IOS Site-to-Site Security Solutions."

At the Cisco Learning Network CCNP Security Study Group, there are threads dealing with errata for this book. As of May 2013, those threads were active and being added to. I've added errata there for one page and then, days later, found more errata for the same page. The errors just keep coming. It's very frustrating to be dealing with switch CLI prompts that start with "router." That's just sloppy work. Figure 7-9 repeats for no apparent reason - was it a placeholder for other diagrams that did not get added before printing?

My experience with Cisco Press books has been positive for the ICND books by Wendell Odom and the CCNA-Security book by Barker and Morris. I went back to the Barker/Morris book for a refreshing on VPNs before unraveling the information in this book, given how muddled the presentation was. I wanted to practice creating VPNs on my home lab using commands from this book and noticed that the commands given do not result in a successful VPN creation. Rather than present a consistent case study, the CLI command example blocks do not necessarily refer to each other.

What about the test questions? Well, a big number of them got phoned in. When I get five answer choices, I feel insulted when two of them are "all of the above" and "none of the above" time and time again. Please just add a fourth, real, choice and make the question an "EXCEPT" question. Those are very challenging questions, but that's what we need to prepare - a challenge! Pearson really dropped the ball on the extra tests for the premium edition - which is a shame, given that they were great for the other three premium editions I used.

This book is a major disappointment, but there is no alternative that I can see to it. That makes it an even bigger disappointment.

EDIT: After writing this, I went ahead and got the Quick Reference Guide for this test. Night and day in terms of clarity and efficacy of examples.

The book contains a lot of information, but heck they all do, I'm not a huge fan of the Cisco Press books, but it seems the higher the test that is pretty much what you get. The material is pretty intuitive and covers what appears to be all the information for the test. Like some reviews there are repeated items and some types or information that does not appear accurate. However I did OK on the test, almost passed, but I did only give myself 3 weeks to study and I didn't have any hands on practice with the material. That is something I would do but in this case I had a free test to take and jumped on it. I will study more slowly and get the hands on that I need, but as far as the book goes I think it is an excellent starting point and contains enough information to know what you need to do well on the test. Good Luck.

Working my way though this after downloading the error fix for all the typos, time will tell.

not a bad book - but like other training materials you can't pass on this book alone. A good additional reference.

I am currently using this book to prepare for the 642-637 exam. I think this book was poorly written. There are so many errors, both technical an non-technical. There are flaws that should not pass through a technical review and remain uncorrected. Yet they did. This makes one to wonder as to what the technical review is all about then. I'll advise anyone who is using this book as an exam prep tool to also use Cisco's documentation on its website. The authors and technical reviewer need to revisit this material.

I knew this was going to be a rough read when the very first sentence of Chapter 1 was a grammatical nightmare, but since it's technical material I set aside my reservations about the quality of the writing and focussed on the technical merits. Sadly, only disappointment lay in that direction as well. Serious and obvious technical errors abound - as an example, the most recent one I read showed a sample configuration which included an access list where the author mistakenly entered a subnet mask rather than a wildcard mask. While the statement is still technically syntactically valid, it would have a very different effect than was described - a clear indication that neither of the authors nor either of the technical reviewers bothered doing anything as basic as actually *testing* the configurations they wrote up prior to publishing. This one is merely an example - additional technical errors can be found in multiple places.

Overall, the book reads as if written by someone whose grasp on the English language is tentative at best, and whose mastery of the subject matter seems questionable. I expected better from Cisco.

A Cisco published book about a Cisco test...

What could be better than that?

What could be better is a book that had been proof read and edited better. There are quite a few typos that are usually found as the book gets published. Most of them really don't matter, it just hits you as you read that says something is just not right. Looking at the bright side hitting such a typo makes you think more about what you are reading. There are also a few basic technical errors. Fortunately not too many, and again the bright side says that from your reading and background you should be able to find them and know what is correct.

The book also gets points for completely covering the subject. If you are like me, you implement a security solution based on your knowledge and do enough more learning to get things up and running. You may know intrusion protection, but never have worked on a VPN. You don't keep studying to learn everything there is on the subject. Here in an organized manner is all of the things you need to know to pass this exam.

Finally that comes with the book is very helpful in showing you the kinds of questions in the exam.
