I need to re-read this book about 5 more times! I tend to swim "my own way" like many others, so I miss out on speed and efficiency often. I only started really swimming a few years ago, and I'm in my late 30's!
I really needed the basics on breaststroke and count on being able to do an efficient breaststoke as a beginner triathlete. Especially when there is a real crowd in open water, we need to be able to use different strokes to get through the rough spots. My first tri swim was a disaster because all I knew was freestyle and wasn't able to alternate if needed. My 12 year old daughter actually attempts to correct me in my kick at the local ymca ALL the time!
I really appreciate this step-by-step book and that the author troubleshoots deficiencies in stroke and alignment. Great book :)
This is an excellent book to have on hand and in possession as I conquered my fear of the water as I decided to learn how to swim after having such a grim outlook all of my life until more recently when I decided to tackle so of the phobias that I hold to this day from when I was a young lad.
the book is used one...but it does not look like the used book..
in very good condition just like new..
thank you.
Looks good, but am sending it back. It will not play.
Even though I'm an intermediate swimmer, I reviewed the basics and followed the guidelines in this book until I felt I mastered it.

Then, just as the book suggests, I continued lesson per lesson perfecting each skill before moving on.

It helped me swim so much more efficiently. I now swim so much faster with less work, so I'm relaxed and just enjoying the water, I love it!

Using the tips and techniques in this book also improved my dives, starts and my turns wonderfully. The How To's are very easy to understand and to follow. I'm so much more graceful in the water now.

I would recommend this book to beginners (because it starts you off with the right ways to kick, right way to breathe, right ways to get comfortable and feel your buoyancy) and advanced swimmers (There's a workout for Beginners to Advanced)
I bought this because I wanted a better understanding of swimming as a sport. I had learned the skill of swimming like most people do in their youth, but since I wasn't very interested in or good at sports my learning stopped as soon as lessons did. In adulthood I rediscovered the joy of swimming and I wondered how I could develop more sophisticated skills. I also wondered how "real" swimmers think and feel about their sport and how they go about their training: what challenges them, what kind of routines do they use.
This book was perfect for me. The author began with the absolute fundamentals of having a relationship to the water and went on to suggest basic routines for the beginner like me. She then took her descriptions to routines for those on the advanced competitive level. I liked being able to see where a more talented person could and would go which is in itself very interesting even though I'll never reach that level; this insight puts my own beinning work into perspective.
After reading this book I was inspired to swim and continue improving my routines. I would never need another book on this subject after this one, it's that all-encompassing for the amateur.
A good book for those who have no idea what they are doing in the pool. Progresses nicely into the different skills needed to be a basic swimmer. Most important thing is to practice, practice, and more practice. One thing I wished this book had more of was detailed illustrations. When I was learning the crawl/freestyle stroke, my progress was slowed because the illustrations sometimes didn't match the words. I recommend using this book along with videos and illustrations available on the internet. With this combination, I quickly learned the crawl stroke. Pick up this book if you want to learn how to swim!
