Wiltshire is a historic county located in the South West England region. Wiltshire is landlocked and is in the east of the region. The English conquest of the district now known as Wiltshire began in 552 AD with the victory of Saxon Cynric over the native Britons at Old Sarum, by which the way was opened to Salisbury Plain. Four years later, pushing his way through the Vale of Pewsey, Cynric extended the limits of the West Saxon kingdom to the Marlborough Downs by a victory at Barbury Hill.

David Hackett Fischer's thesis is that there is a tacit and analyzable logic of historical thought and that historians can improve their historical thinking by applying this logic to their work. Historians' Fallacies is a successful attempt to make history a discipline better governed by reason. I was under the mistaken impression this was a book about historical fallacies.

This is a massive book, over 800 pages of text. I bought it because although I have read a fair amount of American literature there are a lot of gaps in my knowledge. In particular I had an interest in twentieth century poetry and also I was curious to know what a fresh look at literature could tell me about the development of the USA as a country over the last two hundred years. Gray it seems to me adopts a narrative approach. His reading is immense and when he approaches an author his primary objective seems to be, what did they have to say. One or two themes: literature in the nineteenth century often seems to be about the wilderness, the embrace of the wilderness, exploring it.
