My introduction to side drifting came about ten years ago while fishing the Sandy River at Oxbow Park. The ability to apply it in virtually any water that a Steelhead will hold in and cover said water thoroughly in a short period of time is unmatched with any other method

My introduction to side drifting came about ten years ago while fishing the Sandy River at Oxbow Park. I was drift fishing a long Sandy beach when I noticed renown guide, Jack Glass, pulling into the hole from the opposite side of the river well outside my casting range. He carefully instructed his clients were to place their casts and began to feather the oars in such a manner as to keep pace with their offerings. The ability to apply it in virtually any water that a Steelhead will hold in and cover said water thoroughly in a short period of time is unmatched with any other method. Other variations of the method have developed such as using a bobber and jig or even ‘Bobber-Dogging.

There are about as many ways to describe side-drifting as there are anglers practicing it, but on thing's for sure, it's a very effective way to catch steelhead. JD Richey is one of the top side-drifting guides on the West Coast, and in this book he shares everything you need to know to become a successful side-drifter. Best describe ed as a family of techniques, side-drifting includes three methods--freedrifting, side gliding, boondogging. Each method is explained in depth and includes the basic gear you'll need. Experts and guides share their side-drifting tips and tricks; you'll learn all you need to know about: Freedrifting; Alternative baits; Side gliding; Proper gear selection; Boondogging; Side-drifting without a boat; Side-drifting with floats and plugs. Since Dan wrote this book, side drifting has become a very common way to catch steelies here in the pacific northwest.
This book certainly contributed to that. Instructions are straightforward and clear. A worthwhile read.
