I noticed David Crosweller's little book, "Buddhist Wisdom" on a table in a local coffee shop surrounded by other gift type books with inspirational themes. The tiny square size of this book drew me to it immediately; I like small purse-sized volumes that are easy to transport--the smaller size ups its potential to becoming more of a "constant companion" rather than a book that is soon forgotten, gathering dust on a shelf. "Buddhist Wisdom" is just the type of small tome that one picks, up, thumbs through and cannot help but read.

The book's set-up is simple. Its meant to offer daily reflections, so each page is labeled with a date, that day's selected words of wisdom (this printed in a large font that older eyes will appreciate) and the source of the excerpt or quote to provide citation and perhaps a path to further reading. The pages are printed in a mellow magenta, some of which have magenta-toned backgrounds consisting of silhouetted photographs of Eastern temples, monks praying, children laughing and scenes from nature. The overall feel of the book is calming and meditative. Each of the offerings is simple in its delivery, but profound in its meaning and application. The back of the book includes an informative summary of events and celebrations that take place in the Buddhist community for even greater understanding for those who would perhaps choose this path more formally.

I am not a Buddhist, but my personal belief tells me that all of religion's roads lead to the same place. Inner peace and understanding is the ultimate goal. The writings of Buddhism are as enigmatic as the teachings of Jesus. Mere words are often bereft of actual living meaning making them subject to great pondering and a depth of understanding that only comes with time and experience. The Buddha never wrote anything down and the religion that bears his name is, for the most part, non-dogmatic. However, it does bear exploration as a path to help anyone achieve an understanding of life's big questions: "Who am I?" "What is my purpose?" which ultimately lead to a greater understanding of self that leads to a greater appreciation of life.

"The mind, agitated and unpredictable, needs to fix on a target, in the same way an archer directs an arrow, straight and true." Simple words for the beginning of August that motivate me to finish up this review and get to the painting project that awaits me in my garage--something that once I complete will provide a needed stepping stone to increased success later on this year.

Bottom line? Buddhist Wisdom is a nicely priced inspirational book that will provide a wealth of insightful teachings meant to further you on your path of Self understanding. Nicely formatted and compactly crafted, my only wish is that it's cover was fabric bound rather than soft. Recommended for those who incorporate snippets of meditation throughout your day.
