I knew that this book was going to take some effort on my part. I did a first quick read through of the entire book without doing the exercises. I am now starting over, reading, doing the exercises, taking notes at a leisurely pace and really working it. So far so good. There is also a link online to download the workbook and print it out if you don't want to write in the book. I love Martha Beck's writing style, her sense of humor and that it reads as very conversational. I have good feelings about continuing to work this book and find my way again. I may update that 4 star review in a few months once I have more of it really under my belt. I would recommend this to anyone who, maybe like me, feels like they've lost their way, or lost themselves and are trying to re-design or create a new life path that is more in alignment with what you want it to be.

A great read. I was new to Martha Beck, now I can't get enough. Super funny, and a book that you actually finish because it is so fun to read.

A classic. One of Beck's best although she just keeps getting better. This is one of my favorites. I just reread it after several years and gained another layer of clear, applicable insight. Martha Beck glows with authenticity in her writing, never talks down, even though she's entitled to a fairly lofty position. Highly recommended.

Is there anyone out there who does not think Martha Beck is THE greatest? I loved this book when I first bought it years ago and it is still here....somewhere, so, I ordered it again as I wanted to reread it. This should be a"must read" in high school as it is on track about everyday relationships. Ms Beck puts everything in perspective in language that is easy to understand. I signed up for her "daily inspirations" which are priceless and such day brighteners. Thank you ...

I love this book. I read it first on Kindle, and also ordered it in paperback for notetaking. Martha writes in an engaging style that has changed my way of thinking. If you're feeling lost, I highly recommend it.
I read this twice. Once before therapy, once after. Before therapy, I couldn't put any of her methods to use, since I couldn't see clearly--many of my thoughts/beliefs were an attempt to please the "everybodies" that Beck talks about. I couldn't even admit to myself that I really did hate my job (also an academic PhD, but in science). Multiple times she suggests therapy for readers if they can't do particular exercises. Do it! After a short time of coaching and therapy I was finally able to acknowledge to myself that I was stuck in my career because I really didn't like it, and it just didn't fit me...I could understand and accept my feelings better. Then I was able to pick up this book again and read it--now it makes more sense. If you are able to really access your feelings, then just read it...but if you feel murky and unsure of how you feel, just reading this book won't clear things up for you on its own...but it is a great tool to be used on your career/life journey.
