Series: Zebra Historical Romance. Mass Market Paperback: 320 pages. A lovely romance that had everything a book of this genre needs: an unusual heroine, a dark hero and an obnoxious villain. An interesting plot with a lot of atmosphere and some interesting twists and turns. A nice and pleasurable story that offers some relaxed hours of reading pleasure.

This review is of “Midnight Rogue” by Elaine Barbieri.

The story: In New Orleans, 1808, Captain Rogan Whitney, the hero of the book, is tortured and his first mate killed by Gerard Pointreau, a wealthy yet evil man.

Fast forward 11 years. Rogan has survived and become a pirate, with one goal in mind: to get revenge on Pointreau. To that end, Rogan kidnaps Pointreau’s “daughter”, Gabrielle Dubay, the heroine of the book. (Gabrielle and Gerard are not related by blood. Gabrielle’s mother, Chantelle Obreon, was engaged to be married to Gerard but later married another man and gave birth to Gabrielle. When Chantelle died, she entrusted Gabrielle to Gerard’s care.)

As they are compelled to spend time with each other, Rogan and Gabrielle fight a lot, but are also attracted to each other, eventually becoming lovers. However, Rogan still wants revenge against Pointreau for what he did to Rogan and his crew.

The book ends with Pointreau getting killed, reality setting in for many of the characters and Gabrielle and Rogan marrying and having their Happily Ever After.

Upside: As always, Ms. Barbieri is very good at describing her characters emotions. The end of the book is a series of staccato bursts of paragraphs to heighten the drama, which works somewhat well.

Downside: Also as always, Ms. Barbieri sacrifices character development for emotion. There are several subplots, none of which I found terribly interesting. The relationship between Rogan and Gabrielle is very “Stockholm Syndrome”-ish.

Sex: The love scenes are not graphic, nor are they terribly exciting.

Violence: Multiple shootings, a branding, a rape scene. None of the violence is graphic.

Bottom Line: This, thankfully, is the last Elaine Barbieri book I have. Hopefully, my next author will produce a better product than Ms.Barbieri produced.
OCARO
I loved this book...had romance, mystery, and action. I especially loved the character of Rogan...so virile and caring! Elaine Barbieri's books are always so captivating!
