Charlie and the Angel book. Lori set her sight on being an author at the age of ten. She remembers sitting at a typewriter before she knew how to type, pecking out a story about a family who went into space. As an only child, her summers were spent with that typewriter, television, and, above all, books. She recalls thinking that if she could write books of her own, she would never run out of books to read. As a young adult, she got sidetracked by the need to make a living.

One of the best historical westerns that I have read. Charlie Coltrain is a man who had been an outlaw for years after the war ended. Having decided that he was getting too old for that kind of life anymore; for the past five years he had tried living an honest life; while working on a trail herd, he comes across Angelita Reyes, a young woman on her way to a mission in Texas. Angelita is a postulate, her traveling companions have been killed and she is saved from rape at the hands of the murderers by Charlie. She convinces Charlie to take her on to the mission by offering him a large sum of money. Their journey gets sidetracked to Mexico when Charlie finds out bounty hunters and a Ranger are on his trail. Most people fear Charlie, although women flock to his exceptionally good looks. Angelita doesn't fear him however; she begins to view Charlie as her real mission, to convince him that he is not as bad as he repeatedly tells her. Charlie tells it like it is; he doesn't believe he has any redeeming value due to his past and he wishes Angelita wouldn't look at him with hero worship. Charlie tries keeping Angelita at arms length as he believes himself too old for her and someone that she needs to avoid but she remains steadfast. As time goes by, Angelita starts questioning her real mission and instead how she is to ever reach Charlie. This book follows the one titled "Second Chance" as Charlie is included in Second Chance". I found "Charlie and the Angel" to be more interesting and exciting however.
Charlie and Angelina, the leads in Lori Handeland's Charlie and the Angel are imminently easy to like. They are bold, refreshingly honest and stay stawlwart.

Charlie saves Angelina from a gang of marauders who have attacked her companions. Angelina is a postulate waiting to take her vows and she is shocked when she is saved from imminent rape by a rather rough looking cowboy. The Sisters traveling with her are dead along with the priest. Charlie takes Angelina with him to the nearest town hoping to put her on a stage to Corpus Christie.

Charlie is no do-gooder, he is a former outlaw trying to go straight but Angelina is definitely going to disrupt his plans. He truly admires her and desires her too but she is so pure and quite frankly so innocent of worldly vices that he just cannot imagine sharing a life with her. Charlie has a running theme in his head that his past makes him ultimately unworthy of such a lovely creature.

Angelina is torn between her calling to be a nun and her desire to be with Charlie. This is a real struggle for her and it does not resolve itself in a matter of pages. Angelina believes she must fulfill her destiny and she is earnest in seeking spiritual guidance. She is not judgmental though and she exhibits the best parts of her faith, charity and forgiveness.

The leads battle bad guys, bounty hunters and controlling family members in this western saga. Angelina is kind, gentle and most of all loyal. She matures throughout this novel.

Charlie is serious, dependable and intuitive. He harbors a past that makes him doubt his future happiness but fortunately his heroine recognizes his innate goodness. This story was beautifully told and will be going on my keeper shelf.
It’s an interesting idea. But it didn’t turn out to be anything special. Outlaw is on the run from bounty hunters. A lady is on her way to becoming a nun. He helps her. They fall in love. The first half was kind of good. They are drawn to each other, but they avoid sex because of her “to be a nun” status. That’s the source of the sexual tension keeping them apart. There is an attempted rape that is stopped.

Narrative mode: 3rd person. Story length: 354 pages. Swearing language: mild. Sexual language: mild. Number of sex scenes: 4. Setting: 1875 Texas and Mexico. Copyright: 1995. Genre: western historical romance.
Lori Handeland is a terrific author. I love all her books and am trying to read them all. Charlie and the Angel is one of her best books.
I really enjoyed this book. I loved how she took Charlie from being an outlaw, to a good guy (Of course there were alot of bumps along the way.) This was a fast paced book, an once I started it , I couldn't put it down. Can't wait to read more historical westerns from this author
This was a good old-fashioned good ole time western. I loved the characters and the entire story. Great for a rainy day.
The story has everything in it action, humor and very sexy scences. Charlie is a man that just needed a good woman to love and trust in him.
Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. Very good story! Keeps you interested in what happens next.
