Regency fans know that waltzing before given permission by the Patronesses and being seen kissing a man at a ball are both horribly scandalous. In all, this book was entertaining but I just didn't care for the heroine's character.

Regency fans know that waltzing before given permission by the Patronesses and being seen kissing a man at a ball are both horribly scandalous. I was hooked as to what would happen next. What I didn't like about the story is subjective, because these elements might appeal to other Regency readers. It didn't turn me off of this author, at any rate, and I would read another title of hers.

Series: Zebra Regency Romance. Mass Market Paperback: 224 pages. Publisher: Zebra (March 1, 2003). Although something of a rake, Claredon had always believed that he would one day marry the lady of his dreams and lead a happy and contented life as a faithful and worthy husband. But while he is not at all happy about being forced into marriage, neither can he deny that the fiery and strong-minded Victoria does fascinate him quite a lot. During the first half to two-thirds of the book, I greatly wished that Jane Austen could read A Scandalous Season and have the opportunity to know its author. Publisher: Zebra (November 1, 1996). But it took a bit of a detour in the last third, no longer seeming Austenish in the least but clearly having been written for pure entertainment value.

In Regency England, an actress finds herself suddenly playing on a whole new stage. Having risen from the squalor of London’s back alleys to be the darling of Drury Lane, Meg Fletcher was indeed the consummate actress. And it takes all her considerable skills to conceal her shock when she learns she was actually the legitimate daughter-and heir-of Sir Richard Carswell, an aging baronet.

Her new silver gown shimmered and clung to every curve, much more daring than the virginal dresses she’d been forced to wear for years go, and now wondered how much longer.

Her new silver gown shimmered and clung to every curve, much more daring than the virginal dresses she’d been forced to wear for years go, and now wondered how much longer her new gowns would fit her. She rested her hand against her flat belly and smiled. You know, little one, by the time I’m able to wear these new dresses again they’ll be out of fashion. Not that she was complaining. The idea of holding Brendan’s child in her arms made her heart sing. You’ll be just a few months younger than Livvie’s babe.

A very engaging read. Regency romance with a tasty mystery to it, no graphic sex, but definitely romance with all the "standard" tensions of social class-in-conflict with choosing the mate one is meant for. Dashing hero, and a nice choice of villains (you'll probably figure out "who done it" by the 3/4 mark, or earlier), heroine who is independent and intelligent without the snarkiness one often finds in heroines described as "feisty." Characters and a rather complex plot develop well & smoothly, and I found it all believable in context ...something like what you might get if Daphne du Maurier had decided to write "Rebecca" as a Regency, and lighter. This novel comes after Lady Maryann's Dilemma, and appears in it Lady Maryann, as she and Meg Fletcher, an actress raised by a Bow Street Runner, and in Seven Dials, met in the earlier novel. Neither graphic violence nor graphic sex are present or necessary to hold the reader's interest; violent events and sexual encounters more passionate than warm kisses, take place "off-stage" as it were, though we sit with Meg as her wounded Pa expires while revealing (to her) her true antecedents, and conversation and dynamics among the characters make the reader aware of the various tensions & passions at work among them (love, pride, loyalty, loathing...with a touch of madness thrown in). A good little mystery, drama, romance, quite satisfactory resolution. I may read it again at some point. Liked it very well.

There is a mystery as to how and why our heroine, Meg, the daughter of a baronet, became the sweetheart of Drury Lane? Why did her mother leave the man she loved while living in comfort to live with a man who lived above a rough tavern. Who killed her stepfather and why? Who is after Meg? The story slowly unfolds and Meg is in danger. The hero believes at first she is a scam artist after her father's money. Then as time will tell he falls in love with her.
????????????????????????
An Interesting premise . Not enough romantic conflict between H & h .Became boring midway, skimmed to the end. But loved Improper Companion!
