Ms. Gaynor provides no character development whatsoever.

Ms. I didn’t find either Angel or Reed to be terribly likeable; Angel is a bratty child (she spends much of the book hoping her father will come back from the war and rescue her) and Reed an obnoxious bastard for much of the book. Their revelation that they in fact love each other is so out of sync with the rest of the book that it is completely unbelievable. And then, there is the fact that Reed rapes Angel, which also casts a pall over the book.
