This was delightful, irreverent, and a short, easy read. I recommend it primarily for mothers with children at home or who have ever had children at home. It's not likely to resonate with others as well, but oh, does Bernadette McCarver ever understand the life of a busy mother! She is brutally honest about her own mistakes and shortcomings, but manages to ding her family members a few times as well (especially her poor husband). Each short entry is followed by a prayer that sounds just like the kind of conversation one would have with someone who loves you (no matter what) and is interested in every aspect of your life.

One of her prayers that shows both poignancy and humor: "Dear Lord, could I resign from the room mothers' sorority and just run away to become a missionary in the jungles of Brazil instead? That sounds so much simpler than suburbia. In this traumatic twentieth century, we may not go off to fight noble crusades, but we fight the battle of committees and church socials and class parties and baseball schedules that change and school buses that don't come and traffic that jams and taxes that come due. We fight frustration every day. Lord, we fight a war without medals! Dear Lord, help me to have the courage to fight the battles I should, the prudence to stay off the committees where I don't belong, and the wisdom to know the difference. And Lord, the next time someone suggests I volunteer to be a room mother, remind me to put my "no's" where my mouth is."

Those who know me will know why that prayer resonated with me :-)

I laughed out loud at this one: "If you think a 'mantra' is something that goes over the fireplace or that a praying mantra is a weird looking bug with long feelers, then you obviously grew up in a disadvantaged school district...MANTRA is a special word, just for you. You repeat your mantra over and over again as you contemplate your toes, until some great TRUTH becomes apparent to you or you discover the answer to the mystery of your life...I THINK mine might be 'cobweb.'"

Enjoy...

This book is a lighthearted, irreverent book about the ups and downs of being a woman married with kids. I recommend it to any woman, especially mothers, who feel that they're just barely in control of their life! This book will affirm your job as a wife, housewife and mother and lift your spirits.
