I wanted a CD full of instruction, exercises, and focused information about healing with my voice. I was severely disappointed.

Often described as a man who has listened to the world, Campbell was the founder and director of the Institute for Music, Health, and Education in Boulder, Colorado. For seven years, he taught music and philosophy at St. Mary's International School in Tokyo, and he spoke about the transformative power of music in more than 30 countries worldwide. I wanted a CD full of instruction, exercises, and focused information about healing with my voice.

Ancient cultures looked at the human voice as the link between the inner and outer psyches. The voice was viewed not only as an instrument of self-expression, but also as a powerful means of self-alignment. Healing Yourself with Your Own Voice is about rediscovering the natural power of the human voice, and its role in establishing a balanced, healthful life. I had hoped beyond hope that this wasn't as bad as most Sounds True products have become.

I was wrong.

This is a typical product of theirs: starts off with an introduction telling what you bought (duh...). The main program, rather than getting to the point, drones on forever with overwritten fluff, poorly read. The voice sounds almost like it is computer generated at times. The reader (the author, I assume) tries to sound interesting, but comes across very strangely, even goofy at times. It was almost painful to listen to him.

I was hoping the author actually had something valuable to say, but getting through all the endless buildup to the few tiny things of value was more than I could take. My time is valuable - I don't appreciate people wasting it with a ton of padding to stretch material out. This content is easily 90 percent empty over-writing which contributes nothing. If you like long tirades with lots of side trails, then you might enjoy this. I, however, was hoping for instruction to help me with vocal toning and healing, not a lot of background material about Greek theater and other such irrelevant stuff, nor a bunch of stories designed to make me believe that vocal healing was possible.

I already bought the CD, people, I don't need to be sold again and again and again. Get to the point. I thought I was buying some instruction, not a history lesson.

I wanted a CD full of instruction, exercises, and focused information about healing with my voice. I was severely disappointed. (Can you tell?)

All the usual mistakes are here: excessive rambling; lack of documentation (the only listing of the topics is on the disc - kind of hard to refer to it when it is in the player, people); the empty feeling after listening; the sense that they took 5 minutes of actual instruction and stretched it into a full CD, and so on.

There were a bunch of extra paper leaves holding the CD that made it seem like there were things missing. No booklet, no external listing of the program to refer to while listening, no explanations, nothing.

If you like long stories and endless talking with little actual information, then you will enjoy this. If you are looking for good, solid instruction in clear, concise terms, I think you will be greatly disappointed, too.

Jonathan Goldman's work is far better (once he ditched Sounds True and started doing his own stuff).

Not recommended. Save your money.

I used this book for my university teaching and enjoyed the results. The students enjoyed the concepts within, and I found them useful in my own performing.

I think this is one of the best items I have bought this year and believe me the competition has been tough! It's not recorded perfectly but it is a fantastic and fun tool - I really recommend it to anyone interested in any or a combination of the following: voice/vocal development (I'm an opera singer and a teacher, and a researcher with interests in healing...!), acting, singing, healing, self-confidence/self-help, teaching with or without connection to music, sound therapy etc etc. Its relevance is far-reaching.

When you practise the exercises they really do work - they're soooooo easy too, which is of course a bonus! It's not a theoretical technical guide but nevertheless it allows you to find a very natural means of self-expression, without interference from your over-critical mind and often limited imagination. It's great for tuning into your body and becoming "whole"!!!! I can't recommend it enough!

I thought this tape was excellent. I listened to it in one sitting and could apply the knowledge. It tells you in plain english why using your voice can heal you. Nobody ever told you why chanting or using vowel sounds could heal you. The tape is fulfilling but leaves you wanting more knowledge of the power of your own voice that we all possess. A hidden jewel.

Donald Campbell is a pioneer in the field of sound and not of this modern age of workshops and exercises and grand schemes to fix family and personal traumas.

This must be treated as an introduction to the world of music/ sound healing and maybe the student will then want to explore further and discover the likes of Jonathan Goldman and Jill Purce.

I found the book informative with some good practical and sound advice and will be re-reading and putting it into practice to evaluate the book even more.Thank you
