Out of the Darkness tells the stories of more than 20 people who have undergone permanent spiritual awakening after intense trauma and turmoil in their lives. Although psychological turmoil often has no positive effects, for some people, it can be the catalyst for a kind of 'spiritual alchemy', transforming the 'base metal' of suffering into the 'gold' of intense well-being and freedom.

An interview with Steve Taylor PhD: New beginnings come after our soul is freed from shackles of suffering and the scars of trauma. How does this happen and how do we adjust to our new state of mind, the new shift in our life, is explained very cogently in Steve Taylor’s recent book Out of the Darkness: From Turmoil to Transformation (Hay House UK, 2011). My interview with Steve, as follows, relates his insightful discussion in Out of the Darkness on the topic of awakening to a spiritual, positive state of mind experienced by many people after they have been through turmoil in life, including life-threatening situations.

In Out of the Darkness, bestselling author Steve Taylor tells the stories of more than 30 people who have undergone permanent spiritual awakening after intense trauma and turmoil in their lives.

Steve has also interviewed several spiritual teachers whose awakening occurred after intense psychological turmoil, including Eckhart Tolle. In addition to telling these people's stories, Out of the Darkness explains why turmoil has this transformational effect and illustrates the almost infinite capacity of human beings to overcome suffering. It shows how close - and how natural - spiritual awakening is to all of us.

I googled “sudden and profound feeling of freedom and peace” and was led to this book. In it I found many others who also had had the wonderful gift of sudden “knowing”. I am truly blessed to have felt such! I think it has forever changed me.

This has been very interesting to read stories of these many people who have gone through awakening experiences. I actually started off reading Eckhart Tolle's books, then discovered Steve Taylor's (Eckhart's story is just one in this book). So I had a little background experience in knowing what Steve was talking about when referring to "awakening". I've also read "Waking from Sleep", which is another great read on the awakening experience.

As I read this book, I got more and more excited. I'm on vacation, and this book has really turned my vacation into an adventure.

I've studied spirituality all my adult life -- for over four decades. At this time "Out of the Darkness" was exactly the book I needed. So, it's the best one, of course! A bonus is that it's well-written -- a real page-turner. It tells the true stories of people who have experienced traumas like losing everything in a house fire or being diagnosed with terminal cancer. The people that Steve Taylor writes about have responded to their traumatic experiences in an unusual way -- by shifting into a higher state of consciousness and beingness -- "Enlightenment."

Through these stories one gets to see the characteristics of Enlightenment and that it is a state that can vary in its intensity. Some people in the book have attained higher states of Enlightenment than others. One can also see that it's possible to increase the intensity of the state by study and practice. When I read the list of characteristics of Englightenment, I was able to see the degree to which I've achieved each one and what I most need to work on. This is a FABULOUS tool!

After listing out the characteristics of Englightenment, Steve Taylor takes the next great step -- listing three types of exercises to raise one's own consciousness. Steve Taylor understands these exercises so well that for the first time, I really understood their purposes -- I've read about them before in books like the Dali Lama's "Path to Enlightenment," but, in some cases, not seen the purpose so didn't do all of them. Now, I see the purpose of all three types of exercises that Steve Taylor lists, and I've already started doing them. He has laid out stepping stones to Enlightenment.

Additionally, I do another type of practice not mentioned by Steve Taylor, one which can be used to directly remove individual barriers to Enlightenment. This type of practice includes BodyTalk and Scientology -- and probably ones like Cognitive Psychology. So, there are tools additional to the ones that Steve Taylor mentions. But he gives three very powerful types of exercises that are very simple. I'm looking forward to their power.

Thank you, Steve Taylor, for the book that I needed to speed me on my way!

Great book by Steve Taylor. I am reading everything he has written and this book is a great read like the rest. Such a great insight into how and why we think. I gain much in spirituality learning about what is happening and what has evolved in the mind and spirit. Worthy.

This book clearly explains what it means to "cross over to the other side" -to go from the perspective of ordinary everyday egoic mind which is the norm for the very great majority of people and which is a limited selfish and distorted vision-to a much wider ,holistic and complete view of our true reality. And more importantly how this has been achieved by ordinary people without having to follow a particular pathway. Highly recommended.

If you are human, you are suffering.....it's part of the human form.
Can you get out of it? Yes you can......
What can happen when the suffering gets to much to some humans?
Read Steve Taylor's book and find out.
Enjoy

Very interesting, good explanations of what it is to be aware and what causes it.
... Steve's delivery is pristine and his thoughts unusually insightful; each chapter comes together like a puzzle, and my soul tells me he's right.
