It is about understanding and perhaps even agreeing. More than that, it is about analyzing and assessing, looking for errors, not in the interest of silencing those in error, but in the interest of finding their contribution to the whole body of understanding truth and therefore understanding Christ. Arthur Frank Holmes (March 15, 1924 – October 8, 2011) was Professor of Philosophy at Wheaton College, Illinois (1951–1994). Before his retirement in 1994, he had served for several decades as Chairman of Wheaton's Department of Philosophy.

In 1998, the Arthur F. Holmes Chair of Faith and Learning was established at Wheaton College in his . All Truth is God's Truth (Eerdmans, 1977). Contours of a World View (Eerdmans, 1983). Holmes Chair of Faith and Learning was established at Wheaton College in his honor, supporting and honoring the work of scholars in philosophy, history, or English who have given particular attention to one of the major themes of Holmes' academic career: the integration of faith and learning.

To understand the Christian view of Truth

If you want to understand the Christian view of what Truth is and what it means, especially in contrast to [post]modernity's confusion on that point, this is the book for you. I also recommend Holmes's (much more readily available) "The Idea of a Christian College".

Always polarity when first hearing philosopher's topics, e.g. All Truth is God's Truth? What does this mean?

Holmes wants to unload this for us, and does so in very readable and understandable fashion if one focuses on this well-written expose.

He laments relativm's impact upon truth and even in church, where common pastoral, devotional and bible study ways are more therapeutic and emotional than truth based. Pragmatism and other concerns pervade too much, playing right into hands of aggressive anti-objective truth scholars.

Positing that there is real truth outside of revealed sacred, God=inspired Scripture is true. However, we must realize and confess that such truth is not spiritual truth, dealing with relationship between Creator and Creature but of earthly, worldly matters which Bible doesn't address.

Interesting read to ponder.

Holmes' book came about not long after he became the department of chair of philosophy at Wheaton (previously Gordon H. Clark was a philosophy professor at Wheaton who taught essentially that, "God's Truth is All Truth" but he was fired for being too Calvinistic). Holmes writes as a company man to justify the anti-reformed sentiment of Wheaton and appeals to humanistic colleagues by placing their knowledge on the same level as Scripture, thus denying that Theology is Queen of the Sciences, so rather than harmonizing the truths as a "university" (one truth) is to do it rather scatters into an incoherent and random assortment of perspectives. 'All truth is God's truth' is essentially panentheistic, denying the creator-creature distinction. Created revelation is lesser than the begotten revelation of the son (Word of God, Rev 19:13) made flesh.

“All truth is God's truth” is an implicit denial of sin & reality of the curse [and the dogmatic assertion of secularist tolerance] as well as our need for the mind of Christ and his redemption, which leads one into the NPP/ransom theory & Rome which sees man only problem as ontological.And today Wheaton professors unanimously defend the heresy of their Muslim colleague who quotes Pope Francis (as Pres Obama also did) in saying, “Christians and Muslims worship the same God.” This statement is just a logical outworking of Dr. Alfred Holmes' (chair of the philosophy dept) whose book was “All Truth Is God's Truth” contra Clark's notion that God's truth is all truth. Thus, no one can commit idolatry because all worship is God's worship, and there is no false religion and so it makes sense to say that Muslims and all pagans worship the same God as Christians do because all religion is God's religion.

"All truth is God's Truth" is a very pious sounding phrase which is seen often in the literature, especially those writings that are trying to reconcile or harmonize "truths" of science with the Biblical Revelation. This fraudulent philosophy leads to a more erroneous step where "nature" is seen as complementary to Biblical revelation.

The dangerous notion that "nature" is a book which can "reveal" true knowledge, and that this knowledge is compatible with or is of equal validity as the Scriptures is its inevitable perilous aftermath. Its advocates continue to cling to the carcass of empiricism, mistaking its stench for the fragrance of truth.

It is the basis of an insidious philosophy which rests on several incorrect and UnBiblical assumptions because the writer does not know the correct definition of the word Truth.
These several Incorrect Assumptions are:
1- That there are multiple truths available to mankind which can be known
2- That these truths become evident to any honest seeker
3- That these truths can be acquired through human efforts (science)
4- That information about creation is of the same significance as True Knowledge of God
5- That God has revealed True Knowledge of Himself in creation

In other words, Revealed Verbal Truth is confused with information or facts that most anyone can acquire.

The Correctives to such confusion:
It is imperative to understand that:
a- Eternally True knowledge of God must not be confused with information acquired through our daily experiences;
b- Eternally True knowledge of God cannot be discovered by any human;
c- Eternally True knowledge of God is not available to anyone except the elect;
d- So called "General Revelation" is an oxymoron and this phrase should NOT be used by Christians. By definition, Revelation is a ONE WAY flow of verbal information.
e- Scientsts can NEVER discover truth, because information acquired through human efforts is always erroneous and has no resemblance to Truth.

The author's fallacious philosophy continues to confuse and deceive the Church and divert its members from its only Truth, Jesus Christ.
Tyler Is Not Here
This book advocates for God's ownership of and authority over knowledge, though Holmes does this by focusing on God's ownership of all truth. He has been misused to grant authority to ideas of secularists over the work of the church. Though he cracked the door open, by not being clear about God's authority, that is not his argument. He argues in the opposite direction. In the era he wrote this book, he was trying to break down the growing divide between the secular and the sacred by arguing that all truth belongs to God. Better argument is that God owns and has authority over all that is, was, or will be. Focusing on truth did not get him where he wanted to go, in my opinion.
