I bought this book for our first baby, we are now onto baby 3. We used the techniques on our first child and after a few days of pain it worked well. our second child was a lot easier and did not really need too much technique, but i would say that the techniques you learn here do stick with you, and we can see why many of our friends are still sleeping with their children in the room. With our last child who is only just 18 months we did try this technique and found it was just too hard, so we went with a slightly tweeked version, where we would put that baby down awake and stay in the room so that he could see us and fall asleep on his own, this has worked well and now he is able to sleep on his own. Overall I have recommended the book to many friends and think it is worth a read, you do not have to apply everything in the book but it does give you some very good ideas that will help you break the sequence of soothing the baby to sleep.

Let me just say my baby was sleeping thru the night and without my help on the second night after following Hussin's advice. She offers simple practical advice. Let me say this is not a harsh cry it out method, where your baby just cries herself to sleep. You learn the difference between crying and fussing, and you allow your baby to cry for short periods of time, but you are constantly reassuring her without picking her up, and gradually teaching her to sleep without your help.

ALthough knowing the research and theory behind the advice would be an interesting read (such as in the ferber, etc books). A tired and exhausted mommy needs to know what to do fast. THis book provides that....maybe I'll get to the other books later. It also helped me get over the fear of letting my child cry, and the fear of being up all night for several nights while I sleep-train my baby. I previously read Elizabeth Pantley's no cry book. It had some good advice and techniques that I used to complement Hussin's techniques. But I just didn't have the time or energy to completely apply Pantley's method. I would recommend reading her book if your anxious about letting your baby cry, so that you will know some no-cry techniques if you ever need to use them.

Now for the complaint, she's a little too critical of parents who are doing things differently than her, and a little on her high horse about her child rearing philosphies. She also makes it seem like such an evil thing to rock or cuddle your baby to sleep, or co-sleeping. The best best advice that I ever got on this topic was from Elizabeth Pantley. She said that rocking, cuddling, and nursing your baby to sleep are beautiful experiences for any parent and should be cherished. I myself was always in heaven when I held my sleeping baby in my arms, breathed in her every breath, her every smell, and just loved all over her while she slept. I loved cuddling her while she slept with me in my bed, and waking up to her bright beautiful face. But, if you have a husband, a life, a job, etc, it's just not a practical way to function all the time. If you choose to do it, the longer you do it, know that it will be a harder habit to break. So, choose what you want to sacrifice and when. I think that is a very important issue to consider when you choose to sleep-train your baby or put her in her own room. I was anxious about letting go of those moments. But, I'm thoroughly enjoying my free time in the evenings now, and my uninterrupted sleep. And I can still have those moments occasionally.

Now for a bit of soap box you can skip if you want to: The first night I began to sleep-train my baby, she cried for about 1 hour total (45 minutes early in the evening, then 15 minutes later on), but I would go in every 5-10 minutes and reassure her that I'm here and I love her by stroking her and patting her. I disagree with the one reviewer who implies your not a loving, gentle parent if you let your child cry, or that they'll grow up insecure if you don't run to their every beck and call. My husband and I give our child tons of love, attention, and reassurance thru out the day, but she will also need to learn to cope with not getting what she wants all the time, which, at this point in her life is wanting help to get to sleep. It's like potty training, or learning to read and write. Making your child work towards these goals can be frustrating for her, but it is necessary.

In my read-through of Ms. Hussin's book, I can see how implementing her techniques of sleep separation, etc could be useful in getting a newborn quickly accustomed to sleeping independently. However, the title and summary passage make it seem like hers is a method that can be painlessly applied to older infants as well. Unfortunately, when you get to the chapter on older children, her plan devolves into straight forward Ferber, along the lines of "you must come to terms with the fact that your child will cry, but this won't make you a bad parent...". While this may be true for many of us who have waited until our children are a few months old before tackling their sleep habits (or lack thereof), the book's title leads you down a rosy path before dropping the harsh truth at your feet.

My husband and I had 5 sleepless months until we read this book. This was a lifesavor. Our daughter was up 3-4 times a night & wanted to eat to get back to sleep. She refused to sleep in her crib and everyone was cranky. In just 4 days...problem solved! We are in better moods, our daughter is happier all day and the entire house seems to be relaxed.

A baby 4 months and older does not feel that he/she is being abandoned when they cry! BABIES NEED TO CRY SOMETIMES! Crying is only difficult for us as parents to hear because we like having someone who needs us and many parents are overindulgent, however, babies cry to relieve stress and use their vocal cords. No baby has ever cried themselves to sleep and decided he/she does not love mom and dad anymore. If you give your child plenty of love throughout the day and evening, he/she will know.

This book helped us form a bedtime routine, find a security other than a pacifier for our daughter, and most importantly..get some rest. I love this book and regret reading it so late. Her approach is gentle and gradual, but it works. Our daughter was sleeping through the night 4 days after we decided to follow these steps!

We now know for our second child what to do before it gets too late. We highly encourage parents to read this book!
