The traumatic affects of childhood sexual abuse can remain and recur throughout life for women who have not healed emotionally. This book by a family therapist shares stories from 18 women abused as children, explaining that healing can occur at any stage of life, and that healing, itself, occurs in stages. The author offers guidance to recognize the long-lingering potential affects of childhood sexual abuse including depression, anxiety, dissociation, and chronic shock, and she explains steps to take for recovery. Also presented are letters from women who have healed or are in recovery.

Sexual abuse by men, juveniles, and female perpetrators is discussed, as is how children may act out the abusive behavior taught by perpetrators. The incidence of abuse by family members is also addressed. Duncan explains the dual dilemma―moral and legal―that women face in exposing a sexual perpetrator within the family when not protected by the legal system due to statutes of limitations. She also discusses controversial topics including false memory and disclosure of memory to the perpetrator.

Thank you Karen for writing this book!

I have read about half of the book - for me I need to take this information in small chunks or baby steps. As a victim of childhood sexual abuse, I need to be sensitive to my "system" (yes, I have DID as a result of the trauma) and take care of us - not overwhelming any part of my system.

So far, the book clarifies/summarizes/simplifies much of what I have experienced and know on some level. I feel a little less crazy knowing my experiences are normal for what has happened to me. The "Support Your Healing" section at the end of each chapter is helpful - thought provoking - and has many recommendations for actions to take to help with healing. They have already been good things to help with the work in my therapy sessions.

Chapter 5 "The Stages of Treatment and Healing" has been valuable for me - especially the "First Stage of Recovery: Making the Connection" - for continuing my healing journey. I spent years in the mental health system attempting to find the "right" therapist for me. We are all individuals and need to find the right therapist for us - one therapist might be right for one but not another. This section helped confirm my struggle to trust and how critical the therapeutic relationship is for my healing. Most of the therapists I met with truly cared and did what they could, but they just were not the right one - I am glad I did not give up and trusted myself to find the right one, it has made all the difference.

I still have a lot of work ahead. The book has helped confirm that I am a survivor and I am definitely on the path of healing, leading to thriving. I would recommend this book for survivors of sexual abuse, therapists who work with those amazing survivors, and supportive family and friends as well.

I wish you well on your personal journey of healing from the trauma of childhood sexual abuse. I admire your strength and perseverance - trust in yourself for what you need to heal, treat yourself with respect, and keep moving forward.

Healing From The Trauma of Childhood Sexual Abuse: The Journey For Women is a godsend! For those of us who are in the process of recovering some of what we lost as a result of childhood sexual abuse, this book is a real gift! It is easy to read and clearly explains the physical, emotional and spiritual damage that is the legacy of this trauma. As a survivor of childhood sexual abuse before the age of 4, I found this book to be intelligent and informative and comforting. Moreover, it provided me with a clear and logical explanation for all the seemingly unconnected difficulties I experienced over the ensuing 41 years (post abuse) - anxiety, depression, inability to sleep, hyperarousal, agitation, restlessness, fear of sex, hypervigilence, trust problems......
I would recommend this book highly for anyone who is healing from the trauma of childhood sexual abuse. It is a clear, sympathetic and thoroughly researched resource which I am sure would be of great value to anyone for whom this is an issue.

As a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, this book has been an invaluable resource for me. Other books (like 'Courage to Heal') helped me name what I was experiencing, but this book identifies why! It also includes stories from women who have actually healed from their trauma, and that gave me an incredible amount of motivation to continue my healing, as well as hope that I too can say I not only survived it, but that I healed from it. This book validated my experience, helped me understand where I am in my healing process, and showed me what steps to take to continue on my journey. If you are just starting on your journey toward healing, I would read this one along with, or after, one like 'Courage to Heal' because the more resources you have available to turn to, the better.

Best of luck on your journey, I hope you find this book as helpful as I did!

This book is a little to technical in the beginning for the lay person. It has good and thoughtful at home assignments which get a little li long towards the end of the book. This couple with an inner child strategy would work better. A good cognitive book.

The gift of this book is in understanding. It quiets the self-destructing thoughts, affirms the truths that people don't want to believe, and encourages an active role in healing while taking ones own time and care to do so. It inspires hope where there was uncertainty and darkness.

A bit repetitive and technical.

The author has written an excellent book on childhood sexual abuse. The author provides excellent information on the fact that not all survivors experience the same feelings of trauma and shame. It is not victim-blaming but clearly shows that many survivors resist being labelled "victim." One of the best parts is the section on finding a suitable therapist. It is supportive and by using case studies shows that when the survivor is ready regardless of age, they can heal from their past. The author is empathetic to women survivors and provides a variety of tehchniques survivors can use on their journey to healing.
This is the best book for women suffering from childhood sexual abuse. It gives women what most other books about sexual abuse are missing, HOPE. I would recommend this book to all women of childhood sexual abuse.
