It's okay. However, be aware that some of the index entries are incorrect. Plus, there are a LOT of double entries so I doubt that there are really 30K names represented. Plus it is obvious that the writer could have done a better job researching the meaning behind the names. Just on a random QC I found that about half of the cited meanings were incorrect.

I bought another baby name book, 10001 Baby Names, and hardly use it. My old standby, the New Age Baby Name Book, used to name my now teenager, is alpha girl section boy section. This one is far more useful because of the division by ethnicity. For my purposes, I'm often making up character names and use an ethnic group as a basis sometimes, and name my characters from Earth out of this book. It's easy to use, and I can use the meanings as whatever purpose in the story, too. I haven't found any outright errors in what names I'm using, although I've noticed that some of the meanings are different between New Age Baby Name Book and this one, but I only have a little knowledge of how to pronounce German [4 quarters in college long ago] so I can't say how accurate her research is. I can say that she writes very interesting copy and I often enjoy just looking at the background notes. Apparently someone at Perigee Books listens; older reviews complain of the lack of an index and there is an extensive one in the edition I bought 3 months ago. Teresa Norman's bibliography looks good, and she cites some works from university presses. I saw complaints from other reviewers and would like to mention that any published author has no control over proofreaders who think they know more about how to spell than the author. No author proofreads her own book. What we see in published form is a team effort, so maybe Perigee should hear from you with the knowledge of particular spelling errors etc. Teresa Norman herself might thank you! I have never been published, but know several authors [not Teresa Norman!] and a movie producer...

This book is simply put, amazing! My family has been using it for over 20 years to name our new additions. The information given for each name as well as the variety of names to choose from is unparalleled from any other name book or website I've used through the years. Will most likely buy again for gifts as this purchase was actually a repeat purchase for that purpose!

I had this book as a child and loved it. When my husband and I got pregnant, I purchased it for us in hopes of finding our childs name. Although "revised", these are definitely traditional, old school names - most of which did not interest us. Out of their 30,000+ names, we liked about 16. I had really hoped for more.

It's a book. It has names.

The truth is, you really don't need a book, thanks to the internet, but, my wife wanted one.

The largest sections are by far the American and English sections. I was very disappointed by the foreign sections, I could name names off the top of my head not listed.

if you are looking to name a child or a "D&D character" using a nationality this is the ONLY book of names I have EVER come across that is laid out this way.....want a Hawaiian name go to the Hawaiian section, want Irish go the Irish section... the names are then alphabetized for boys and girls with definitions!

While pregnant with my daughter (now almost one) I looked at every baby name book at Barnes & Noble, and finally bought this one because it was so complete and thorough, and just extremely satisfying to browse and read. I really wanted a baby names book with lots of international names, as well as detailed information about what the names mean, their origins, alternate spellings, etc., and this book has all of that. In fact, I plan to purchase it again for my next pregnancy because someone with a pregnant daughter "borrowed" it -- permanently... -- from me. It's that good! :)
A comprehensive naming book I know I'll be using a LOT.
