It is a great book for teaching English to non-English adult students.

This is a very useful book, full of ready-to-go writing prompts.

Tina Kasloff Carver's books are always visually appealing for students, and this photocopiable resource is no exception. Carver uses friendly fonts that put the student at ease, but the material is real-life and practical, not abstract stuff that is too over simplified to be of real life value. There are maps of the USA, employment applications, checks and recipes that look exactly as they would if you brought in an authentic document, but it is all self-contained in one resource.

Students practice writing and reading with journal entries, dialogues, letters, forms and more. Just find the lesson you want, copy it, and you're ready for a fun day in the classroom. The book starts with a 15-page activity guide to help teachers plan, then begins with basics like properly printing the alphabet (a handout I use even in my advanced classes) and writing in cursive, which many adult ESL students have never had the chance to practice. Real-life writing situations that the grammar books never get to are covered, including what to say on a birthday or valentine card, how to congratulate someone, express sympathy or decline a wedding invitation. In other words, it covers things adult students really want to know how to write!

There are models and activities focused on thank you notes, letters accepting a job, returning a product or thanking your child's teacher. Practical everyday writing tips include writing an early dismissal note for your child, complaining to your landlord, giving directions and inviting people to an event. Students practice filling out forms from job applications to checks to pharmacy lists and credit applications. Legal documents like leases and W-4s are included, as are deposit slips, change of address forms and custom declarations.

These are only a sample of the topics covered. While the book is marketed as a writing resource, it is really more a "life resource." Many of the handouts prompt discussion about the topic and educate the student about everyday life skills from handling overdrafts to shopping with coupons, putting in a change of address or evaluating classified ads. Each photocopiable page is self-contained and professional, and will become a valued resource for your students, as well as an easy lesson for you. Keep this book close by!

This is the book. Never mind all the theory, this book gets down to the practical, giving lots of suggested activities for making writing relevant, meaningful, and possible. Great for EFL, upper beginner to lower intermediate.
