Roger Bannister was almost a mythical figure. Oh this just gets better. Imagine being so wildly talented you achieve a world 1st by doing the sub-4 mile (while a junior doctor), then give up sport to become a brilliant Professor of neurology pi. witter. I truly hope he was an orthopaedic surgeon. Medicine was caste-based in those days, only those born into a bone family & steeped in the guild could fix fractures.
