Chapman comes pretty close to getting it right.

Ships from and sold by Mannabooks. When we were finished we read Mayan Mission The Mayan Mission: Another Mission. Another Action-Packed Adventure. Chapman comes pretty close to getting it right. The target audience will not be the wiser when she stumbles a bit trying to fit one of the words in (using "prototype," for example, to describe the last instance of something, rather than the first, or an early, instance), and the plot gets a bit clunky at times.

The concept of seeing the words in context, then reinforcing them with definitions, is excellent.

The problem is that most of the words are easy; they are already in common usage of an average high-school student. (My student is sophomore.)

A better bet is to read well-written literature, with a dictionary handy. Reading classics will also give the student a feel for correct structure in complex sentences, which will help in the grammar portions of the SAT. (Again, this book was not challenging enough.)

This might be very helpful for a foreign student to brush up on their English.

Exceptional resource for preparing students for the reading sections of the SAT. Learning vocabulary by encountering it in the context of a novel is a much more natural process for students than attempting to memorize isolated word lists. I have been pleased to use this book for a number of years in my work helping talented inner-city students to get into great colleges. However, the sudden jump in price this year is troubling and will make it impossible for our non-profit organization to continue to give each student his or her own copy.

I was in a total panic to learn this awesome vocabulary list of 250 words and happened on this great book. Thanks Dr. Chapman for getting me through it painlessly and quickly (or as you would probably say, with alacrity! At the same time I really enjoyed the story itself. Note that Dr. Chapman also wrote "The Marino Mission". I am reading that one next time just for fun.

Both this and the Marino Mission are great resources for people wishing to study up on vocabulary for the SAT or other purposes. Although everyone ought to know at least some of these words, others aren't in the lexicon of even most above-average high school students. I read both books last year as part of my AP English class. I found that I knew 2/3 to 3/4, if not more, of the words, but many of my classmates struggled with the hundreds of new words. Chapman ought to be commended for figuring out how to put so many words in a book.

My advice for those wishing to learn the vocabulary: Don't just read the book. Read it chapter by chapter, and when you reach a word you aren't completely comfortable with, a word that you couldn't easily put in a sentence off the top of your head, then study the sentence while keeping the definition in mind--don't just try to memorize the definition, either. The strength of this book is the way it can teach sentence context.

I gave it a four star instead of 5, however. However, the storyline is by far the most terrible stereotypical nausea-inducing love triangles I have ever read. I read all four Twilight books, too. The characters are annoying and unbelievable, the plot is simplistic and predictable, and the romance is beyond cliche. The purpose of this book was not to be quality literature--it was to teach vocabulary. Still, be forewarned.

My Mom bought me five different SAT novels and after reading all of them, I can say that this was the only one that had a lot of vocabulary words that I didn't already know. This book was filled with hard words and didn't waste my time with words I knew back in fifth grade. I liked the tricky twosomes section in the back that points out the difference between similar sounding words like "aesthetic and ascetic" and "inimical and inimitable" and "ingenious and ingenuous". This was a great way to learn the really hard words.

Does a good job integrating vocabulary words into the story without it feeling like a vocabulary lesson. Cute story.
