Great for students of English. The layout is good, split into three general levels and with a glossary at the back that translates all of the idioms into French, German, and Spanish as a last resort for speakers of those languages if they are not getting a particular idiom. Oh, and it is not a dictionary, each chapter (each level has several) comes with exercises to practice the new idioms as well as those of previous chapters.

The practice / review / exams with multiple choice answers at the end of each chapter were very helpful, but the fill-in-the-blank questions were confusing. This edition is a little outdated and the student I tutored had a more current edition. Basically it's a very helpful book in teaching English idioms to new learners of English, but I use it only as a supplement to basic conversational practice and grammar education.

I first taught English in China since 1994 and this book has been a wonderful resource. I continually recommend it to both students and teachers. As someone initially not familiar with teaching ESL and EFL, this book was my greatest resource.

My classes were two 50-minute sessions and I used this book during the first hour, teaching 6 idioms at a time. Every 3rd class I used the lessons as a quiz, adapting it to the Chinese culture.

The reason I liked this book of idioms over others, is because the idioms are practical and commonly used, rather than idioms such as "eager beaver". As a native English speaker, I had always instinctively used "in" and "out" without realizing the difference between the two words. Now I understand and can easily teach others.

However, there are some typos in the edition I was using. I'm sure those have been corrected in the newer version.

Dixson presents the material in ways that matter! This book is a great tool especially for those new to the field of ESL and EFL.

I teach for a language company and this is very helpful with my upper level learners.

Good for people that want to learn a few more about English language.

Readers need lots of vocabulary, but in learning to use that vocabulary, they will gain understanding of the nonsensical side or English. So useful to be able to just pick up a used copy too. Beyond idioms, I think the author sneaks in some very useful phrases too. Be careful, though to check up on understanding the vocabulary. Useless if you don't know the words.

I love this book! I've been working with Literacy Volunteers for a number of years and this is one of my favorites for intermediate and advanced students. I particularly like the fact that this book rejects the inclusion of slang, which is a whole different topic. Shortly I will order two additional books to give as gifts to two students when they complete the program this summer.
This edition is an improvement over the 1992 edition. The same idioms are presented, but the format is easier to read and includes red letters highlighting the idioms. Formerly some of the pages were printed on blue background making it hard to see. These pages are now white. Additional and more interesting exercises are included. The answer key it still there, saving the teacher time. This edition has divided the idioms into beginning, intermediate, and advanced. An excellent book for adults.
