I was so confident in Urdu after this "Teach Yourself" course but the Grammar book will make your realize that there is still a whole bunch more to learn and clear up the fuzzy spots. My partner is a native Urdu speaker and after reading the book himself, he felt that this book was not suitable for a complete beginner unless they had experience of Arabic script as the Urdu script in this book is taught in a shorthand that is not obvious to newcomers.

I have a number of email friends in Pakistan, so I began to read up on the history, customs, politics and language of this country. The two most important things I learned are these: First, politics in Pakistan makes our politics in America seem very tame. Secondly, I was surprised to learn that conversational Hindi and conversational Urdu are exactly the same language. It's only religion that separates the two cultures, and this book is a valuable introduction to it. I think the language should be called "Urdu-Hindi", and though the Persian alphabet is not easy to learn, India's devanagari alphabet is even worse.

So if you have any interest in learning this important language, this book and its CD is an excellent place to start.

the down side is shared by all TY books - terrible paper quality and inexplicably tiny font
on the positive side this books has much more
first, the authors do understand the meaning of an introductory language book, unlike most of such books, and keep the vocabulary relatively small (~900 words) and relevant
second, as they know what they are doing the authors keep repeating same words and expression throughout the units which helps immensely to put the words into long memory and builds confidence in general
third, i like the story line,characters and culture notes ( but I think TY books are good at it in general). Short and relevant. It conveys love and interest in this culture so I feel like I want to visit it there and take a train from Karachi to Lahore :)
Fourth, the quality of sound is surprisingly good and the actors talk in almost a natural speed. Besides one female voice which kind of shrill and difficult to get through, the others are very clear and easy to follow.
My positive review , i admit, is very much affected by Teach Yourself Hindi book which I didn't find as accessible as Urdu edition.
Dont make a mistake though, as TYU alone won't take you too far away just like any language resource. Language resources just don't work on their own. Now I am about through 2/3 of the book so by the end of the last unit I am expecting some sort of solid base for further study and surely getting a very good general idea about how Urdu works.
