I've used the Oxford Basics series for some time now. The series is designed for ESL teachers who don't have a whole lot formal training nor have many resources to work with - that great mass of recent graduates who have flooded mostly into east and south east Asia for decades now. Every book in the series lays out, in very simple terms, a few dozen classroom activities that can be done and done well.

This book is part of the "for children" imprint and focuses on lessons for very young learners (age 4-7) and young learners (7-12). The activities (games, mostly) in the book aren't revolutionary, but they are all very easy to plan, implement and adapt. Unlike some other books of the same type (I'm thinking of the old standby "Games for Language Learning" by Andrew Wright, et al) the activities presented in a step-by-step format that will give novice teachers some confidence. It also makes suggestions as to how long each activity will take to complete. I do wish I had access to this series when I first started teaching... it would have been especially valuable at that point. That said, I do find it helpful even now that I have years of experience.

Experienced teachers looking at this book should keep in mind that they will already be familiar with a lot of what is presented in this book (again, there is nothing too revolutionary here). Also keep in mind that the activities are mostly suited to smallish (~20 students) classes.

This series of books contains a number of very basic activities for ESOL teachers. I purchased many in the series to use when I was teaching overseas. They are thin and easy to pack. The activities don't require complicated materials nor are they labor-intensive; just simple, like the title says. You can't plan your lessons around it, but rather I recommend using them to supplement what you are teaching. It is also good when you are stuck and need an activity. I think of it as part of my bag of magic tricks-I can pull out an idea when I need it.
