Jules Eugène Louis Jouvet (24 December 1887 – 16 August 1951) was a French actor, director, and theatre director. Overcoming speech impediments and sometimes paralyzing stage fright as a young man, Jouvet's first important association was with Jacques Copeau's Théâtre du Vieux-Colombier, beginning in 1913. Copeau's training included a varied and demanding schedule, regular exercise for agility and stamina, and pressing his cast and crew to invent theatrical effects in a bare-bones space.

Louis Jouvet was a French film and stage actor, film director. Jouvet was an immense movie presence in the late thirties, so plainly powerful and intelligent-and determined to have the world know that theatre was more important than movies. In 1913, he had joined Jacques Copeau’s company; but in 1922 he set up his own company and combined acting and directing. He had an especially close relationship with Giraudoux, whose glossy wit suited Jouvets style.
