In a series of books and brochures Cirlot not only presented the individual artists of this group, but also instructed the Spanish public in the history and theoretical foundations of the modern movement as a whole. In the course of this critical activity Se?or Cirlot inevitably became aware of the ‘symbolist ethos’ of modern art. A symbolic element is present in all art, in so far as art is subject to psychological interpretation.

Why would you write a book about symbols and have little to no illustrations? I was so disappointed because the writing is decent, but by the third time I had to go to the internet to guess at the symbol being discussed, I was through.

Very, very interesting. This allowed me to write my major composition essay from a much different point of view than I originally would have. I appreciate the constant knowledge it lends even outside of school work.

As the title said, it is a dictionary. But because it is one of symbols i had assumed that it would not only tell about the symbols but also show what they look like. It talks about many types of symbolism and some history of certain symbols, but as i said, i wih they did more than describe it.

I had to give it a 4 star rating not because of the lack of information but as it describe each symbol it had no picture, however it's a great book.

I have been using this for years and recently have lost track of my original hardback edition. I bought two, one for my stepson who made the comment recently that he wished he had a copy.
This is so much more than one of those this is what the symbol means, this provides true semiotic description and analysis often with historical context. Excellent tool for writers and close readers or people just interested in signs and symbols.

This book is not only fascinating, but highly valuable! I am a director, acting coach and teacher. Research is required. When exploring dramatic texts, this book is one of the best references I have come across. Beyond its practical use, however, it is also a pleasure to pick up and scan for interesting information. It brings depth of understanding to the world we live in. It is a gem!

This is an excellent book on symbolism and symbols. I've used it many times for graduate study in literature and religion.
Just skimmed the book thus far and it looks pretty good from what I can see. Well worth the small amount paid.
