This book was excellent for use in a Russian language study group at Shippensburg University from 2011 to 2015. Since Russian is not offered at Shippensburg University, I used it to help students interested in Russian to learn Russian from scratch and to maintain and improve their skills if they already had some Russian. It can be used very effectively in conjunction with a Russian Graded Reader I-IV published by the D.C. Heath and Co. It would be great if there were audio recordings, but I simply made some audio cassettes for students (yes, cassettes!! I believe they are superior to CD for students first learning; CD's are fine if you already know it and want to review).

this size is more convenient don't know if Mr. Jackson is still around but kudos anyway

Nothing can replace a real live teacher and real situations that demand the use of new language in everyday life. That being said, this textbook is great, just outdated. The Soviet Union no longer exists and St. Petersburg has regained its original name. I'd like to update this. Publishers, are you reading this review? Simple fellow

It is too easy for my husband who minored in Russian in college, and it doesn't have all the nuances for words and grammar that he needed. But, for a beginner, it is a good basic teacher.

While writing reviews of others books I have, I wanted to add my thoughts concerning this. I bought this book while on vacation in the UK years ago. I found the layout and format good, but saw a need for materials to ensure that I learned correct pronunciation. The book described two cassette tapes designed for the book and I ordered them from the UK. They were very helpful. I do not know if this is in print or if there is now a CD, but the materials were very good. I could not indicate but would say 4.5 stars only because I had to order tapes - it may now be possible to get a CD with it.
