Good stories especially the ice dragon. Thinking about giving it as a gift.

I'm a huge fan of collections such as these. I often think that authors are at their best when writing short fiction (whether fantasy or science fiction oriented), since they can't devote pages of exposition to expand on a small point. They have to hone their story to the bare necessity while still making the characters and situations compelling.

Since I'm a big fan of fantasy in general and dragons in particular I had high hopes for this collection. That turned out to be--well, mostly wishful thinking.

There are a total of 13 stories here from a variety of authors, most of whom I wasn't too familiar with as fantasy authors. And that might be the crux of the problem....most of the stories here were (IMO, your mileage may vary of course) only so-so.

Mind you there are a couple of real winners here. I was very impressed with "The Ice Dragon" though it had a rather silly ending, "The George Business" was both funny and clever, and Craig Shaw Gardner's "A Drama of Dragons" was set in his Ebenezum Universe and was probably the best of the lot. But these three gems just aren't able to salvage the book from the rest of the dreck, weary stories that I often found myself skipping through as they were simply too weird or dark. I would expect a book entitled "Dragons of Light" to primarily focus on uplifting,dragons-in-a-good-light kinds of stories...and some of these weren't that.

Definitely a so-so collection and one I wouldn't go out of my way to get. Recommended only for hard-core collectors of dragon stories or Orson Scott Card edited collections.

The purpose of the book, as stated in its introduction, was to bring together "good writing and good art" from top-notch sci-fi/fantasy authors and illustrators. Each illustrator was chosen because his or her style seemed to uniquely fit the story he or she was visualizing.
This may have been a great idea, but it just didn't work out. In my mass market paperback edition, the illustrations were all reduced to fuzzy black-and-white sketches. The stories themselves were either run-of-the-mill dragon stories or trite parodies. This collection barely rose to the level of mediocrity.
