The card players were out of sight in the guardroom, where they belonged. Jim, you are the dumbest most moronic idiot who ever came down the pike. I won't, I promised in grim silence.

Jim was left in the custody of the League Navy, this story opens with him escaping from his prison cell on the League base on Steren-Gwandra, where he is awaiting deportation back to his home world. He has discovered that Bibs, a crew girl from Captain Garth's ship, is also a prisoner. Jim holds Garth responsible for the Bishop's death, and plans to hunt him down, with Bibs' help. Garth is really the crazed Captain Zennor, head of an army which continually defies League peace treaties, and now plans to invade and conquer the planet Chojecki. The people of Chojecki are pacifists, having no armies and no police. But Garth's generals decide to attack anyway, since there are no medals for "generals who bring back the troops intact". Jim must save the people of Chojecki before he can face Garth.

I read this whole series back in the 70's while in the navy. It's still quite as good today. The narrator, I have to so, really is excellent. he gets the tone of Slippery Jim Degriz just exactly perfect. I'd be giving it five stars except that I must be saving top rating for Jack Vance.

This was a good adventure. I liked the "tongue in cheek" tone of the book and was impressed with our main characters amazing quick thinking skills and fighting prowess.

Sadly, I had to purchase this because I accidently bent the front cover of a friends. I had no idea how much this book was worth and neither did he until I tried to replace it. Anyway, he was satisfied with the hardcover book. I was relieved and still don't understand why the paperback is worth more than the hard cover.
