The Assiti Shards series is a fictional universe invented by Eric Flint. The defining characteristic of the fictional universe is the existence of the "Assiti Shards effect", and the impact that strikes by Assiti Shards have on characters in the stories

So, I finished reading Eric Flint's 1632 recently. The premise of the book is a modern-day West Virginia miner town is thrown backward in time to the middle of the Holy Roman Empire during the Thirty Years War. The Good: It's established in the introduction to the book that when the town is sent back in time - due to some aliens monkeying with space-time as a form of "art" - another universe splits off. So it is possible for the 20th century people in the town to change the timeline.
The Assiti were a sophisticated and curious alien race that mastered spacetime, which they used in making "art". However, their amusement and practice in their "artwork" was dangerous. For example, a minor mistake by the Assiti caused the transportation of the West Virginian town of Grantville and its inhabitants to the midst of 17th-century Europe during the Thirty Years' War, creating a whole new universe

This is something of an oddball volume, so it’s perhaps fitting that it has an oddball history. Many of the stories contained herein first saw life as stories intended to be published in the electronic magazine devoted to the 1632 series, the Grantville Gazette.
1632 is an alternate history written by Eric Flint, the author of Mother of Demons, which was selected by Science Fiction Chronicle as one of the best novels of 1997. Eric Flint was born in southern California in 1947. Flint is also the co-author, with David Drake, of the acclaimed Belisarius series: An Oblique Approach, In the Heart of Darkness, Destiny's Shield and Fortune's Stroke (forthcoming in June, 2000). He received a bachelor's degree from UCLA in 1968 and did some work toward a P. in history, with a specialization in history of southern Africa in the 18th and early 19th centuries, also at UCLA.
