This was a bit dissappointing. This highly ranked fantasy was well-written but somewhat choppy and has little fantasy. Reads much more like historical fiction. The story line has been repeated in newer works with better plot lines so I found it hard to discern what was new vs renewed.

If you like fantasy, this is the one. Trust me.

I purchased this book because I kept seeing the name Jack Vance referred to in other book reviews "...author is not as good as Jack Vance..." I really enjoyed this series. While Suildran was an early main character. She doesn't really play that big of a role in the series. Aillas is really the main character, but there are many other characters. Personally my favorite character is Madouc in the 3rd book. Aillas has a string of bad luck, but he is generally innovative enough to come up with a solution to most problems he encounters. This book is fantasy. I also read some of his science fiction and they are great as well.

Fans who are just getting to know the writings of the late, sadly missed Jack Vance, will drool over this magical trilogy. For sheer entertainment it is hard to beat. When the first edition came out I and no doubt others were haunting the book shops whilst awaiting the next two volumes. Now it is at ones finger tips, the reader is so lucky.
