As one would expect of Harry Harrison, a sci-fi great, this is an interesting well written story. However, the ending seems flat. Some reviewers claim that is because this isn't a short story, but some chapters of THE STAINLESS STEEL RAT. I have been unable to determine if that is so. I believe the Rat was first published as a short story then expanded into a novel. Either way this is a free introduction to Harrison's famous series.

For those who don't know, the Rat concerns the exploits of a master criminal forcibly recruited into the Special Corps, a galactic intelligence/crime fighting agency. The Corps' director is a former criminal as are its operatives.

I did not find anything extraordinary about this story. In fact, the plot appears downright boring and contrived. The " classic " science fiction style is pathetically outdated, and the anticlimactic ending left me feeling like I wanting a better product. At least this was a free story on Kindle.

I've read some of the Stainless Steel Rat books before, and some of his other stories too. He's a great writer with a great sense of humor. This book, though very short, is a great free introduction to the Rat stories. For those of you who don't know the Stainless Steel Rat story, Jim DiGriz was a grifter, feeding on the society like a rat feeds on our own world. However, their world is so organized and "tight" that you have to be a stainless steel rat to survive. He's the ultimate improvisational thinker. He can plan, but he's best when things go wrong. Right at the beginning of the stories he is nabbed by a super secret government organization and coopted to work for the angels in the way of scoundrels. Kind of like Han Solo working for the Rebellion in Star Wars.

Try it. It's short and free and fun.

Need I say more? If you're familiar with Harrison's character then this will be a great read. If you aren't this will still be fun, and you can check out the Stainless Steel Rat books.

A good quick read. Just enough to keep the reader interested in finishing the space story. Not for experienced readers.

I love classic sci fi and especially Harry Harrison and am infinitely grateful that I have found a lot of his works on Amazon. This tale of a roguish agent on the hunt for the thief of a battleship was both nostalgic, smart and humorously tragic and yes a good morsel of sci fi.

As noted it was a decent read and I wish I had read the whole book. It is worth a look.
Very enjoyable short story.
